Sources: Unity08 to Re-Form as D.C.-Registered Draft-Bloomberg Entity
Liz is reporting that Unity08, the group which advocates a nonpartisan presidential ticket in 2008, will collapse at 2 p.m. today and reconstitute itself as part of movement to draft Michael Bloomberg.
Two sources I spoke with today say there's something to this. One of these sources said Bloomberg had turned down an offer to run under the Unity08 banner, prompting the group to abandon its name and reorganize around Bloomberg’s message of competence, and bipartisanship.
It’s unclear whether this would pave the way for Bloomberg to use the group’s infrastructure to get on the presidential ballot in states around the country.
Unity08 will resurface as DraftBloomberg.com, according to one of these sources.
This new site was registered on February 23rd to a group called Connections Media, located at 428 U Street NW, Washington, District Of Columbia 20009. The company “produces winning interactive media programs for selective political, public affairs, and corporate image campaigns,” it says on the company’s website.
I left a voice mail and am waiting to hear back from Jonah Seiger, the managing partner of Connections Media who is listed as the contact person for DraftBloomberg.com. I also left messages with a Unity08 spokesperson and Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg’s top political aide. I’ll update when I hear more.
Just as we suspected. Unity08 was unable to get traction since they started out declaring their intention to choose a Rep plus Dem presidential ticket. That ruled out a true independent or any of the existing third parties.
We lobbied them for months to join our draft committee. If there is any person that should be drafted – Bloomberg is the one. But if they were serious about Unity – they would reach out to the third parties and try to get consensus on Bloomberg leading rather than having a split among numerous independent parties.
IF this is true to any extent I and several of the people I know that have signed up with Unity '08 will withdraw our support and refuse to allow our signatures to be associated with this event.
To abstract the intent of the movement into some rich mans drive for the presidency is as corrupted as the current two parties that control our electoral system.
This country is going to hell in a hand basket and "We The People" are just watching from the shadows as we are driven off the cliff.
Maybe after the next depression we will look back and see what we allowed to happen with some perspective.
I doubt they would use the Unity08 "infastructure" for getting on the ballot. Word is Shilpi Niyogi got laid off last month:

It is not true that Unity08's original rules banned an independent or minor party member. The only rule on affiliation was that the presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate could not be in the same party.

As a member of Unity08 and Chairman of a new third party (New American Independent Party) I am very disappointed in this news.
I did not sign-up to become a member to support Michael Bloomberg. Unity08 members were to draft the issues and vote for a candidate. Our party, the New American Independent Party have atleast 2,000+ ( possibly many more )of our members within Unity08. They did not sign-up to give their personal contact information to a Michael Bloomberg draft campaign. They did not ask to be called yesterday for a "Media opinion poll" to help Bloomberg's campaign strategy.
They did not donate money to support a Bloomberg campaign.
They thought they were supporting a real 'people powered' movement.
Unity08 needs to return all money donated to it's organization. Bloomberg doesn't need it anyway. The draft bloomberg campaign should NOT use Unity08 member's personal contact information. Although, I believe they already have.
America needs real hope. Not more of this kind of nonsense.

Nobody wants Bloomberg. A billionaire. Out of touch with the real world.
Doug Bailey and Jerry Rafshoon co-founders of unity08 slammed the doors in the faces of the unity08 delegates. These phonies put forward unity08 as an opportunity of the average citizen to nominate and elect a President and Vice-President of the United States and we bought into it. We thought that they were men of principle, but they turned out to be just another couple of Washington Slim Balls. We donated money to unity08 and they took it and ran. They sent us their disingenuous email thanking us. When they look in the mirror in the morning, they will see two cowards who ran away when it got tough.
I would not vote for Bloomberg if he ran unopposed!
While some participants engaged in various independent orgs may find this move by U08 diconcerting the fact is that THIS move makes perfect sense. Non-partisanship, non-alliance, and the capactity to achieve immediate relevance based on national electibility are THE ONLY ISSUES that matter here. Michael Bloomberg is not just another New Yorker, he is a man of immense abilities and they happen to be the ones the nation needs in anoyone who takes the helm NOW. I hope that all those who claim they are seeking a viable independent candidate to CHANGE THE SYSTEM will close ranks and support this man. I wish them and Mr. Bloomberg every success.
