The Washington Post picked up six Pulitzer Prizes today, a record for the paper and one shy of the New York Times' record of seven back in 2002. Dana Priest of the Post nabbed her second Pulitzer in three years, winning the Public Service award along with Anne Hull and photographer Michel du Cille for exposing mistreatment of veterans at Walter Reed Hospital (She also won in 2006 for Beat Reporting on counterterrorism prisons). Walter Bogdanich of the the New York Times has won his third Pulitzer for reporting with Jake Hooker on "toxic ingredients" in everyday products from China.

The Post won prizes in breaking news reporting, public service reporting, national reporting, international reporting, feature writing and commentary. The Times won prizes in explanatory reporting and investigative reporting.

In the six the Post won, the Times was nominated in three categories (breaking news, international reporting and national reporting). The L.A. Times and the Wall Street Journal were both shut out, with the papers nominated twice and once, respectively. The Boston Globe and the Chicago Tribune each won one.

"Amid all the gloomy talk, the newspaper winners and finalists are heartening examples of high quality journalism in all parts of the nation," said Sig Gissler, the administrator of the Pulitzers at a ceremony at Columbia today.
