On the night of Monday, July 27, Bill O'Reilly welcomed Richard Cohen, the head of the Southern Poverty Law Center, onto The O'Reilly Factor, to talk about Mr. Cohen's repeated public criticisms of CNN anchor Lou Dobbs.

In recent weeks, along with several liberal media watchdog groups, including Media Matters and MoveOn.org, the Southern Poverty Law Center has petitioned CNN to fire Mr. Dobbs for repeatedly providing a forum to conspiracy theorists who believe, against all evidence, that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

On Monday night, Mr. O'Reilly wondered why Mr. Dobbs' critics bothered taking his bait. "I don't know why you guys are overreacting to this," said Mr. O'Reilly. "I mean, that's—come on, I mean, it's not true. Mr. Dobbs is trying to get ratings, trying to be provocative."

Sure enough, stirring up controversy and public outcry is a time-tested method in cable news of juicing your ratings (and, as we noted recently, Mr. Dobbs of late has been in dire need of something to stop his ratings slide).

But somewhat remarkably, to date, Mr. Dobbs' fascination with the president's "mysterious" birth origins has failed not only as a journalistic line of inquiry but also as a lure for ratings.

To wit: According to The Observer's analysis of Nielsen data, in recent weeks, as criticism of Mr. Dobbs has continued to go up, his ratings at CNN have continued to go down.

Mr. Dobbs' first began reporting on Obama birth certificate conspiracy theories on the night of Wednesday, July 15. In the roughly two weeks since then, from July 15 through July 28, Mr. Dobbs' 7 p.m. show on CNN has averaged 653,000 total viewers and 157,000 in the 25-54 demo.

By contrast, during the first two weeks of the month (July 1 to July 14) Mr. Dobbs averaged 771,000 total viewers and 218,000 in the 25-54 demo. In other words, Mr. Dobbs' audience has decreased 15 percent in total viewers and 27 percent in the demo since the start of the controversy.

Arguably, interest in cable news has slumped across the board since early July when attention over Michael Jackson's death was still at a fever pitch.

But, that said, Mr. Dobbs' ratings over the past two weeks, during the height of the "birthers" controversy, are also down significantly compared to his overall numbers during the second quarter of 2009 when he averaged 769,000 total viewers and 222,000 in the 25-54 demo.

In summary, if Mr. Dobbs' affinity for "birthers" is a ratings ploy, it's a pretty ineffective one.

Post a Comment The Discussion

Lou Dobbs - tiresome racist and xenophobe

Mr. Dobbs reminds us all of the "Chief Inspector" in "Return of the Pink Panther" - with his twitches, etc. he is a pantomime of a psychopathic fruitcake. The obvious problem he has with ratings is that he does not have the good fortune of playing opposite Peter Sellers. The solution to CNN's troubles is obvious. Hire away Geraldo "Don't Call me 'STUPID'" Rivera and have him co-host with Dobbs. It would be side splitting and perhaps a movie.

Reluctantly, I would watched Dobbs' show ever now and then. I often found him to be too pessimistic. Now I know why.
After hearing about comments made re "Birthers." I have decided to completly cease viewing his evening CNN program.
It's pathetic that some...would stoop so low, as to do anything to improve their ratings. Is this what we have come to when reporting the news? (Just give the viewers inaccurate and "racist" news, they'll buy it!) I think not!
Mr. Klein...needs to rethink his thoughts about Dobbs. The cable channel is already plummeting in ratings.

Dobbs out of line with rest of CNN

I enjoy watching CNN for my news. I feel they are the most balanced of the major news networks, with MSNBC too far left and FOX obviously off the charts to the left. But I turn it off as soon as Lou Dobbs comes on. He is out of step with the rest of the network. If Dobbs were on MSNBC, his ratings might be going up, but the typical CNN viewer is sick of this kind of crap and sees Dobb's show as a blot on the normally excellent CNN lineup.

I have some nitpicks and clarifications, but I mostly agree.

To be fair, knowing the political spectrum isn't very important, but Fox is not a left-wing network, they are a right-wing network. Liberals (Democrats) lean to the left, while Conservatives (Republicans) lean to the right. You are correct in your assessment of MSNBC being a left-wing network, and in your assessment that Fox leans off the scale in one direction, but Fox News is a right-wing network.
.
I personally think Dobbs' rhetoric is that of a conservative-leaning independent, so in a way, if he had to go with a network, CNN is his best bet for ratings, since he is not radical enough for Fox and is an improper fit for MSNBC (Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann visibly dislike Dobbs). However, I agree that he does seem out of step with the rest of the network, and rather than being another comforting voice of the impartial center, he comes off as offensive to everyone.
.
I watch MSNBC for Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, though I dislike Chris Matthews and Ed Schultz. When I want news or I feel MSNBC is going too far, I watch CNN too. The only person I dislike on CNN is Lou Dobbs. They would be doing themselves a favor by dropping him.

louie

I totally agree. I always turn off Lou when he comes on CNN because of the negativity he spreads. Its funny that he gets defensive when people call him out on his dumbass rhetoric. I think he might be more comfortable at FoxNews.

That "Birther" Movement is Racist Should Be Beyond Doubt

That Lou Dobbs' continued parroting of the cliam that President Obama was not born in the U.S. should surprise no one, given his pronoiuncements on illegal immigration have taken on a disturbingly anti-Latino tone.

But then again, the "Birther" movement against Obama is all about one thing and one thing only: Obama's race. The "Birthers" are white people who simply cannot stomach the reality that America elected a black man as president of the United States. This is clearly a racist movement.

The clincher on Dobbs: Check out this little item on my blog that was first broken by DailyKos last September:

"Dobbs, while attending a Values Voters summit in Washington, purchased a box of so-called "Obama Waffles" that features racist charactures of the [then] Illinois senator. A photograph of Dobbs was taken down from the Web site of the Family Research Council, the conservative organization that hosted the summit -- but not before DailyKos.com snapped a screen shot of the photo."

Questioning or disliking Obama does not make you a racist

That is a neat trick. You must love President Obama or you are a racist!

By the way, President Obama is NOT black. He is as "white" as he is "black". If you must keep score by race then he lands on the "white" side, since he was raised by the
"white" side of his family.

If people ask the President to prove that he is constitutionally qualified to be holding that office, what is the problem? Would that work for you or me? He could easily release his documents: school records, college records, passport...

Go outside of your Favorites listing and do some research for yourself.

I really miss Martin Luther King jr.!

I have to differ with you on your statement regarding the presidents race. Based on laws in this country written during slavery era. Just one drop of black blood would designate you as black and therefore open to be enslaved.
Still on the books. He is a Black man who happens to have white blood in his system like so many of us desendants of slaves.

Calling Dobbs a racist does not mean one worships Obama

Dobbs has been called a racist long before Obama even ran for President, because he is obsessed with Mexicans and illegal immigrants. I'll tell you right now I dislike some of the things Obama has done even though I voted for him, and I am still glad he is president.
.
Now, the whole reason the Birther debate is ridiculous is because OBAMA HAS ALREADY PRODUCED HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE! It is on the internet for anyone to see. Most of the news networks have run stories confirming it. The certificate was shown on Lou Dobbs' own show when he had the day off. Anyone in the media or in elected office should know better, and anyone in those positions who claims he has not produced it are being intellectually dishonest.

Take your own advice: go outside your favorites and do some research for yourself.

If you are willing to read something different, you could start with this. You may have to put on you objective thinking cap.

I am obviously outside of my favorites list. How do you think I got here?
I do like to get different perspectives on issues. I usually like them more thoughtful and factual, a little less snide and flippant.

I am also glad to hear that most of us are black, problem solved…it is on the books (you could save me some time searching and let us know which book). Not that I doubt it, there are still law on where to hitch your horse.

Lou Dobbs Is Not a Journalist

It is ironic that Lou Dobbs would become a news item shortly after the death of Walter Cronkite, a true journalist who made his mark with his gentle on-air restraint. For years, Dobbs has smugly made himself part of the news, rather then report it objectively. He should be relegated to the trash heap of lurid attention-seekers.
CNN is a fine network, but I always have to turn away when Dobbs comes on. He is not a journalist. He could learn a lesson from Walter Cronkite's style.

Lou Dobbs

Lou Dobbs is one of the few in these times that doesn't express cowardice or support voter intimidation through ridicule.

"Question with boldness....." Thomas Jefferson

It is sad in this day and age that citizens respecting constitutional requirements are ridiculed by the Obama administration and the media.

The constitution requires a presidential candidate to be a natural born citizen. Citizens respecting the constitution require proof that a candidate is a natural born citizen to begin with so as to make an educated vote.

No proof has been offered to an impartial judicial body to verify Obama's elgibility. All that has been offered is a COLB which doesn't mean he was born in Hawaii. Yet it is the citizens right to have verification in order to do his duty and cast an educated vote.

Instead of supporting the citizen, the Obama administration and the media prefer to mock those respecting the constitution and deem it appropriate to spend over $600,000 to hide a birth certificate he should be proud of. Even Robert Gibbs gave the middle finger of ridicule to 400,000 concerned people who signed a petition demanding proof of eligibility.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhF2XOWN0ns

Now if everything remains the same, wouldn't it be great before the 2012 election to see 500,000 concerned citizens in support of respecting constitutional requirements march on Washington returning Gibbs' middle finger by demanding proof of eligibility in numbers hard to ridicule. Maybe it will happen. The idea is too obvious.

Lou Dobbs

Oh my! I thought I was the only one that turned the station at 7:00 PM. I just can take all the negativity. Lou just wants to stir up the crazies in right wing. I have issues with people like Dobbs,Hanity and Rush. I'm happy to see there are level headed people that are not afraid to stand up for our way of democracy. The Fact is Lou, the President does not have to show you anything. Let it go!

Certificate of live Birth Clarified

I was born in Florida in 1959. My "birth certificate" is labeled "Certificate of Live Birth" and the words birth certificate appear no where on the document. My husband was born in 1957 in Georgia and his "birth certificate" is labeled "Abstract Certificate of Birth" and the words birth certificate appear no where on the document. There isn't or at least there wasn't a standard "birth certificate". President Obama's "Certificate of Live Birth" is a legitimate birth certificate as is mine. Those who are making a challenge based on the fact that he has only produced a "Certificate of Live Birth" need to educate themselves, but this will probably never happen.

Lou Dobb?

I strongly recommend that Lou Dobb should be considered persona non grata. He is a racist to the core. This is not something i just found out. When i first watched his show several months ago, I needed no one to tell me that he is a ricist and i stopped watching his show long time ago. I didn't even know he is still there. I love this country though because there is freedom of speech

Lou Dobbs

You guys are crazy. Lou Dobbs is being slashed because he's the only semi -sort of conservative on CNN. His reporting is provocative, yes, and his need for ratings, absolutely, but, he's been right on everything he's called out on through the years.

GO LOU DOBBS!! By the way, I'm in that under 54 group. Just thought I'd let you know.

Problem is the posters here do not watch lou dobbs show.
what he said was President Obama is a citizen born in hawaii. what he asks is why The President does not make available the long form certificate of birth to shut the door on the controversy. He does not question the validity of his citizenship, why a president who ran his campaign on transparecy would allow this to brew was his question.
This is sad that when a certain segment of society with a differnt view then a news commentator call for his firing.
what happen to freedom of the press or free speech for that matter. my politics are middle of the road with a leaning towards conservative than liberal. I dislike Bill Maher on HBO so i do not watch the show i do not protest or attempt to silence his view, Lou Dobbs has a right to his view and opinion and if you disagree change the channel.

I Dont believe Obama is a Natural Born American and I am Latino.

Yes Thats Right, I am Not White Proud of My Mayan and Bass Roots but 100% American. Lou Dobbs recieved word from Phil Berg, A constitutional Attorney In PA, about pending cases Regarding A Barry Soetoro AKA Barack Obama and other Barack Obama VS. Us. Stay Informed. Phil berg Sued the DNC before they nominated Obama. They Had 30 days to respond and didnt. legal means he admits to the charges of not being a natural born American. Yea he maybe an American Citizen... but not naturally born. His term is Legally Illegal. Good Job Lou. Google Barry Soetoro!!

i think this article is like all the other left wing media, you have mr. dobbs who is bringing up a VERY valid point and the left comes in to immediately smash his first amendment rights of free speech. there is a law suit going on right now that i have read only the head line for now but it is telling of an army seargent who does not consider mr obama his commander and chief and does not want to take orders from him, he wants proof of american birth. anytime any one of the "silent majority" decides to stand up and question the incremental destruction of this country, the left freaks out and pulls out anything thing thtey have to fight with in order to keep people like mr dobbs quiet. i for one find this pattern in the media very disturbing and scary. we need truth in the media now more than ever, and we are consistently let down. by this practice, the media BREEDS the conspiracy theorists that they so fear. dont hide!!! if you hide, people will seek........and they have. if the birth certificate is real, why is there an executive order to prohibit its release? we have the right to know who he is. the media should support that. what country is this?
