If the NYTimes.com most-emailed list was curated by Aunt Mabel, Digg.com’s ‘top news in all content’ list is probably generated by her 20- (or 30-) something nephew: a Twittering, iPhone wielding, card-carrying member of Generation Wii. Here’s what this dude (we’ll call him Kevin) and the rest of Diggnation have been Diggin’ in the past week:
Top 10 Anime movies that surpass Disney by light years — Screenhead.com asserts that Akira, Spirited Away and Cowboy Bebop surpass any Pixar flick (“BLASPHEMY!” says macfan93). iDoraemon also comments: “Shut up, article writer.”
Five girls strip-searched at school — The Des Moines Register reports that five teenage girls were forced to take off their clothes for a search after a classmate reported that $100 was missing from her purse. The superintendent called the action “allowable.” Meanwhile, Digg comments on this link (“I just got a boner reading that,” “Were they hot?,” etc.) make us lose faith in humanity.
Banksy Mural Destroyed by ‘Accident”‘ — The BBC reports that an infamous Banksy mural was painted over in thick black paint by “workers” hired by the local British government. Owner says: “The workmen were smiling as they did it – they thought it was funny.” Cougarmicrobes comments: “unbelievable. So typical: they paint over murals by artist but leave advertisers to rape our cities.”
Why not spend $21 billion on solar power from space? — The Japanese government is prepared to spend some two trillion yen on a one-gigawatt orbiting solar power station, according to the Scientific American. Mitsubishi and other Japanese companies have signed on to boost the effort, which will offer constant solar energy production. KibblesnBitts: “Sun for everybody? That’s….SOCIALISM!!!!!”
Giant rat found in ‘lost volcano’ — A crew from a BBC TV show, Land of the Lost Volcano, stumbled upon a new species of giant rat in Papua New Guinea. It’s more than two and a half feet long, “one of the largest ever found,” and “has no fear of humans.” One Digger insists: “They are just tourist[s] lost in central park.” Be forewarned: There is a video behind this link.
“We Should Be Treating Health As A Condition, Not Commodity” — The Huffington Post highlights Friday’s episode of Bill Moyers’ Journal, in which Mr. Moyers described the current state of the health care debate and commented about gun-toting protesters at Town Hall events. “Poor Obama,” he said. “He came to town preaching the religion of nice. But every time he bows politely, the harder the Republicans kick him. No one’s ever conquered Washington politics by constantly saying ‘pretty please’ to the guys trying to cut your throat.”
Microsoft ‘indoctrinates’ Best Buy workers w/anti-Linux lies — DailyFinance.com sees a post on a message board, and writes up a separate post claiming Microsoft is “indoctrinating” Best Buy workers to sell its highly anticipated Windows 7 operating system by using outright lies about the performance of open-source competitor Linux. Chrysalii explains why it’s at the top of the Digg list: “article attacking both Best Buy and Microsoft…they might as well just glue it to the front page.”
Amazon Deforestation Drops 46 % In One Year — TreeHugger.com has some good news for greenies. A report notes that logging rates in rainforests dropped 46 percent in 2008-2009, the lowest since 2004. BitterBuffalo33 might’ve Dugg the wrong story though: “is it bad that I thought this was a story about Amazon.com?”
Chargers’ Shawne Merriman arrested for choking Tila Tequila — San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of choking and restraining television reality show hostess and model Tila “Tequila” Nguyen. Digger painting says: “what a horrible story, I hope hes okay.”
