There’s still some action happening out there, but it looks like we’re going to make it through afternoon matches without any glaring upsets.

Here’s what happened today:

-Despite Wimbledon-like temperatures, overcast skies this morning and an ugly economy, the U.S. Open breaks an all-time Opening Day attendance record with more than 36,000 people coming through the gates
-Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo and Marion Bartoli all won today in easy straight-set victories.
-John Isner’s serve looked as impressive as ever and he won in a straight-sets upset over Victor Hanescu; Donald Young lost in four sets to Tommy Robredo.
-Tommy Haas struggled on Court 11, but found a way to outlast qualifer Alejandro Falla in what would have been the easily the biggest upset of the day.
-Best match of the Day: Sam Stosur defeated the veteran Ai Sugiyama in three sets on Court 13. And we all know who was there for that one!
-Bethanie Mattek-Sands looked a bit like a baseball player–or maybe a softball player–with her high socks. She won in straight sets.
-James Blake and Lleyton Hewitt both cruised to late-afternoon wins.
