Saujani Says She's Going to Challenge Maloney
It’s official. Reshma Saujani, the former HillPAC lawyer who raised $1 million for John Kerry in 2004, is going to run in a primary against Rep. Carolyn Maloney in Manhattan. Last month I wrote about how Saujani was preparing to run, but didn't get her to talk.
In an email sent to supporters at 11:31 a.m., Saujani said she's going to do it. “It is critical to the future of the campaign that we raise a significant amount of money by years' end - just seven weeks from now. We cannot bring about change in Congress without you.”
She’s also up with a web site, FaceBook and Twitter account.
It will be tough. She's taking on an incumbent who, despite an aborted Senate run and unfortunate verbal slippage, hasn’t been tarred with any major scandal, and maintains the loyalty of many Democratic officials at the local level. (Considerably less so at the statewide and federal levels.)
Saujani does refer to herself as a “community organizer” and talks about “change” to congress, but doesn’t hint at where she differs from Maloney substantively.
Anyway, here’s her email, which a reader forwarded to me.

Friends,
I am writing to you with exciting news.
Over the past several months, many community leaders and activists have reached out to me about running for Congress in the 14th District of New York. Today, after careful consideration and much consultation, I officially launched the Reshma for Congress Exploratory Committee.
As many of you know, I have been a lifelong community activist with a deep commitment to public service. When I first told you that I was contemplating a congressional run, the typical response I received was, "Well, it's about time."
I am so grateful for the support you have given me over the past several years. You have stood by me and offered your assistance and encouragement in every endeavor I have worked on - from registering voters to working on campaigns. I could not embark on this campaign without each and every one of you. And as I take this next step, I am asking for your support again. I fully realize that the road ahead will be challenging. But I believe these tough economic times call for new leadership in Washington in order to address the critical issues facing the 14th District and the nation at large.
To help get our campaign off the ground, we are asking you to do three things:
First, visit and direct your networks to our new website - http://www.reshma2010.com - and sign up for campaign updates to follow our progress.
Second, use your online and social media networks to promote our campaign. We've assembled a great team of experts in social media and online campaigns, so stay tuned for additional information about the creative ways we will be engaging voters and supporters and how you can directly contribute to these efforts. But, for now, please follow @reshmacongress on Twitter, and send the Reshma For Congress fan page on Facebook to your friends.
Third, please make a contribution at http://www.reshma2010.com/donate
It is critical to the future of the campaign that we raise a significant amount of money by years' end - just seven weeks from now. We cannot bring about change in Congress without you. I know times are tough - after all, that's why I'm committing myself to this effort. I realize that I am asking each of you to make a financial sacrifice during a difficult economic climate. But I hope you will invest in me and in our campaign. The maximum individual contribution is $4,800. Please make a contribution in any amount you can, and I hope you will also commit to raise additional funds from your personal network.
Showing strong support in the first months of our launch is invaluable to demonstrating that we can and will run a viable campaign. I have no doubt that we can demonstrate this quickly with your help.
Finally, I'd like to end on a personal note. Many of you have known me for a long time. We've worked together on a number of past campaign efforts. You know that I'm not one to start something that I don't plan to finish. I want you to know that I plan to put everything I have into this campaign. I want to lead so that each citizen has a chance at the American Dream. My family is living proof of that dream. I am committed to ensuring that this district and our nation continues to be a place of opportunity and hope for the next generation and for people of all walks of life. It is the debt I owe for the freedom and possibility that my family found here 35 years ago, and for the opportunity that I've been given in my own life.
Sincerely,
Reshma Saujani

go reshma!
But she's never given the max to any other candidate, period! How can she be so arrogant? Reshma, why don't you at least max out to SOMEONE, ANYONE before you ask the same of others? I mean, the whole time we worked on Hillary you didn't even max out. I can't believe it. You are so hypocritical.
go reshma!
but why don't you max out to someone, anyone before you ask the same of others? I mean, please, the whole time we worked on Hillary and you didn't even max out to her. I can't believe you are so shallow.
New Voices Should be Heard
I really wish Democrats would not engage in such petty criticisms of each other. Lets focus on an honest debate of the hard issues facing our great city. Its pretty clear from her personal and professional background that Ms. Sajani represents a fresh voice in politics. If hers turns out to be a voice backed by new and interesting ideas, then isnt that something we should support?
Community Activist??? Where???
Reshma says this in her e-mail "I have been a lifelong community activist." Where exactly b/c it sure hasn't been in the 14th Congressional District?
I am a long time resident of the 14th CD and I am active in the community serving on my local Community Board, fighting over development, working to elect progressive Democrats like Jonathan Bing, Jessica Lappin, Dan Garodnick, and Micah Kellner to name a few.
My wife is active in school overcrowding issues and serves on the Manhattan School Overcrowding Task Force.
We have NEVER heard of Reshma Saujani!!!
And what exactly in Reshma's mind has Congresswoman Maloney done to not deserve re-election? She works tirelessly for the residents of the 14th CD both in NY and DC. She authored the recent law giving consumers new protections from the credit card industry. She has brought new schools to our area including the Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Does Reshma have any accomplishments close to these?
Also, announcing you are running against someone 7 weeks after they lost their husband is the height of tacky. Sounds to me that this is nothing but blind ambition.
Congresswoman Maloney has served our area with distinction and I hope she will continue to be our Congresswoman.
Everyone Deserves a Chance
I agree-let’s not engage in petty criticisms. Reshma has worked through out the years fighting for what she believes in and we owe her an honest chance to let her make her case ---that after all is the democratic system.
Let's See What Happens
I applaud Reshma's decision and dedication in seeking this congressional opportunity.
Just because her activism has been on broader level, and not honed in (yet) on district 14 is no reason to discount her as a serious candidate. Living in the district, I look forward to hearing more about her perspectives and platform - it'll be refreshing for the entire district to see how this race plays out and even challenge Maloney on whether she truly is in touch with NYers needs. Maybe Maloney has been doing good things, but perhaps someone else can make even greater strides.
Postscript. Insinuating a strategic correlation between the death Maloney’s husband and the announcement of an EXPLORATORY run for Congress is disgraceful. Likewise, the personal jabs re. donations is silly. It's commonplace for donation requests to occur and the above email excerpt is merely informing the reader of the max contribution, and not demanding a $4800 donation amount.
What She Has Done in the 14th CD Matter to Me
I don’t live on the “broader level” as you put it, I live in the 14th CD and I care what she has done to help my community. Plus, Reshma is presenting herself as “community activist” (her words not mine) and she had better be prepared to explain what she has done in the 14th CD b/c from what I can see it is absolutely nothing.
With regards to the timing of the announcement, I was stating my personal opinion having lost my father less than 2 years ago. A death in the family does not in any way give someone a pass on electoral competition but we have become such a coarse society we don’t give anyone the opportunity to grieve for the loss of a loved one.
Would it really have hurt Reshma to have waited until after the holidays to announce her intentions? You don’t have to agree but that’s way I feel.
This is too funny
Obviously you "Friends of Reshma" are astroturfing this blog. She hasn't done ANYTHING ANYTHING ANYTHING in or for the community. She's not on the community board, has never been to ANY of our meetings, isn't a member of ANY local political club. What are her concrete political affiliations? Where is her activism? Where does she volunteer her time? Not Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, that's for sure. Not at St. Paul and St. Andrew. But bet she starts showing up there now. Betcha she does.
Competition is good
Hopefully that will bring the best candidate forward for the district.
