Now that the David Paterson saga has moved into the realm of Real Things as opposed to Speculation, we reach what was perhaps an inevitable development: the story about the stories about the story is now the subject of a Media Equation column by David Carr.
Discussing the Paterson rumors as well as other recent meta stories, like the New York profile of Rupert Murdoch, Carr writes:
In an age of annotation, the manufacture of sausage is sometimes as much the point as the sausage itself. When I sent a note on Thursday to John Cook, the investigations editor at Gawker who wrote the front-running item on what the New York magazine piece would and would not contain, he replied that he’d be happy to talk, and then reminded me:
“You realize you’re daring me to do a post about what you’re working on, right?”
