Si Newhouse will move Condé Nast into a building downtown, most likely One World Trade Center, to take advantage of below-market rents. The move is unlikely before 2014, but there is plenty to think about before then.

We took the temperature, and the results are — unsurprisingly — mixed!

“Basically everyone wants to get out of Times Square officially anyway,” said one staffer at The New Yorker. “I did have a flash of concern. Of all the addresses in the world, do I really want mine to be One World Trade Center?”

“I think people would be too embarrassed to admit to being scared of terrorism,” the staffer added. “It would make you sound like a Yahoo.”

Hmmm…

“And, really, who WOULDN’T want to work in a building at Ground Zero? Especially if it’s called the World Trade Center,” tweeted New Yorker television critic Nancy Franklin.

“Could you really pick a better target than Condé Nast?” the staffer quipped. “Literally everything that’s wrong with the West.”

“I think it’s great, but I think a lot of people aren’t happy about it,” said another staffer. Also, the staffer added, “for a lot of people it’s inconvenient.”

Tom Scocca turned the concerns over terrorism on their head, comparing Condé’s move downtown to the ground-zero mosque:

Let’s say it’s yet another attempt by America-haters to insult the victims of 9/11. The coastal media elites and their summer interns will traipse lightly into the office, worrying about hemlines and punctuation, on the actual ground where American heroes died.
