On the Don Imus radio show this morning, David Paterson responded to Kirsten Gillibrand’s recent comments that the governor should resign if the allegations that he intervened in a domestic abuse case are found to be true. (Via Ben Smith.)

“Whenever you get in a jam, there are people who will throw you under the bus,” said Mr. Paterson, who paused for a long laugh from the crowd. Though Ms. Gillibrand’s call was predicated on the allegations being proven–unlike some other calls for his immediate resignation–Mr. Paterson seemed to expect more from the woman he appointed to the U.S. Senate.

“I mean, whenever you watch a movie or whenever you read a book about someone that’s in a difficult situation, there are always those who do that. They just don’t expect you to get out from under the bus. And when you do, they should be forewarned.”

Asked whether they’d spoken since then, Mr. Paterson said: “It’s hard to talk to anyone when you’re under a bus.”

The governor declined to talk about the details of his alleged call to the woman accusing his top aide of domestic violence, but denied it was coercive. “I would never, nor did I ever, try to persuade anyone to take the natural course of the law that would protect them,” he said.
