Weiner: Like Bloomberg, ‘I’m Not Eager to Start 2009′

Before testifying in the City Council this morning about M.T.A. funding, Anthony Weiner played it cool with reporters, declining, unlike his mayoral rival, to criticize Michael Bloomberg for saying "We love the rich people," but he did say he is continuing with his mayoral campaign.

“Look, I’m focusing on doing my job right now," Weiner said. "I think the mayor has said he doesn’t think the campaign should start right now, and I’m not eager to start 2009 any sooner than I have to. You know, this has been hard for some of my friends in the political pundit class to understand, but I’m doing what I think feels right, and what feels right to me is being in Washington, working as hard as I can, delivering for New York.”

When asked by a reporter, Weiner added, “I am running for mayor.”

Weiner has been keeping a notably low profile as of late.
