ALBANY—In the race to replace Kirsten Gillibrand, Assemblyman Jim Tedisco has ended the day with a 17-vote lead over Democrat Scott Murphy, state and county elections officials said.
The overall tally is now Tedisco 77,035; Murphy 77,018.
The "lead," as the recanvassed numbers come in, has gone back and forth: the final tally as of yesterday had Murphy ahead by 83 votes. Apparently, officials at the Saratoga County Board of Elections reported an incorrect tally to the state board yesterday, resulting in the change. A spokesman for the state board said the numbers changed overnight.
(Diane Wade, Republican Commissioner of the Saratoga County Board of Elections, granting a rare phone interview amid the deluge of requests I and others have been calling with, said that a disrepancy "was discovered in the recanvass on Friday, and didn't get entered correctly into the computer until this morning.")
An official tabulation from the State Board is here, but it's one vote off from our above tally. Lewis Sanders, a commissioner of the Essex County Board of Elections told me by phone that in a recanvass there each candidate gained one vote. That number didn't make the state board's daily deadline.
Officials in Greene County will be counting their mechanical votes tomorrow.
The process for counting absentee ballots will begin then, too.
