David Weprin Hires a Comedian

City comptroller candidate David Weprin is getting public speaking tips and comedic advice from political activist and comedian Randy Credico.

“The guy has a great sense of humor,” Credico said in an interview. “He’s a sensitive guy. He’s not just a bean counter, he’s got a big heart.”

Weprin’s brother Mark recently said David is not running as “Mr. Personality."

Credico added, “It’s a matter of communicating [Weprin’s] sense of humor.” That, Credico said, will help “separate him from the very, very drab field” of “people without personalities he’s running against.”

(To be fair, as the manager of the city pension fund, comptrollers are, in a sense, bean counters. The job attracts nerds for a reason.)

Credico said he is working with Weprin “part-time” and planning to organize a comedy fund-raiser.

Credico has worked statewide as an advocate for reform of the Rockefeller drug laws, and recalls Weprin being an early supporter of the effort.

Boosting Weprin’s humor quotient is actually, said Credico, no laughing matter. “People can relate to a sense of humor, particular in these tough times.”

That, he thinks, will translate into votes.
