Here’s Christine Quinn on the floor of the City Council this afternoon, right before the Council voted to ask Albany to raise the city sales tax and eliminate some taxes on business.
Quinn spoke about not “hoisting” on New Yorkers a nickel sales tax on plastic bags, and noted that the Council revenue package is keeping in place the sales tax exception for clothes under $110 dollars.
Quinn said preserving the sales tax exception will save New Yorkers about $300 million, and that “had we eliminated that exception” then “we also believe that that action might have cost the city as much as 1,200 to 1,500 retail jobs.”
