Bill Thompson supporter and labor leader Stuart Appelbaum complained loudly that the governor and state Democratic Party weren’t doing more to help out in this year’s mayor’s race. Appelbaum went as far as saying Paterson could lose (even more!) support because of his inaction.
Thompson isn’t expressing the same frustration, but he declined to say that Appelbaum is speaking out of turn.
While greeting voters on the Northwest corner of 86th Street and Lexington Avenue during yesterday’s after-work rush hour, I asked Thompson about Appelbaum’s remarks.
“It is my expectation that the party will do a number of different things, and I believe that we’ll be working both with the governor and the state party in the near future. So, as I said, I’m not worried. I think after the primary we’ll see a lot more help from the state party, as well as the governor,” said Thompson.
When I asked if Appelbaum’s complaints were premature, Thompson said, “I don’t know if it was premature. I’d like to see the state party and the governor involved. Clearly we’ve been reaching out and speaking to them. So, I don’t know if it was premature.”
While we were on the topic of soliciting Paterson’s support, I asked Thompson if he even wants it, given Paterson’s low poll numbers and crumbling political support.
“David’s the governor of the state,” Thompson said. “Yes!”
