And thats what makes NYC/Manhattan so great, while it may not be the most expensive city to live in, in the world for the US it's surely up there and not just expensive but exclusive to those as the article mentions with good credit, liquid assets, and a good smile for the co-op boards. Saving with your credit with no fee balance transfers, no monthly minimums on checking etc are good starts to building a solid history and saving.
