This is a wonderful article and an affirmation of the great art that American culture can produce. Whether it was Howard Hawks and Alfred Hitchcock influencing the French New Wave as Mr. Bogdanovich points out or Douglas Sirk as a friend once told me shaping Rainer Werner Fassbinder or jazz inspiring European musicians from Paris to Warsaw, American culture has made the world a far richer place.
