At last Thursday’s Queens County Republican Party
Reorganizational Meeting, Republican State
Committeeman and County Chairman Phil Ragusa was
re-elected to the Chairman’s post vacated by State
Senator Serphin R. Maltese last February by a 3 to 1
margin. This follows Chairman Ragusa’s resounding
victory in the September 18th Republican Primary for
State Committee.
In making the case for his re-election, Chairman Phil
Ragusa had highlighted his experience as a Republican
District leader and accomplishments as the County’s
leader since February. Ragusa emphasized his support
for Republican Senators Frank Padavan and Maltese and
their mutual support for his Chairmanship. Recounting
his pledges made and pledges honored since his
election, Chairman Ragusa spoke about successfully
ushering in many reforms and initiatives designed to
improve the Republican Party’s fortunes in Queens
including a much touted candidate school, candidate
recruitment efforts, extensive community outreach,
voter registration drives, fundraising, support for
the Queens Young Republicans, a state of the art
website and routine news releases and issue advocacy.
Chairman Ragusa also pledged to continue these
activities and to work with all Republican leaders who
share a vision for growing the Republican Party and
advancing Republican principles.
Chairman Philip Ragusa noted that his opponents ran a
tough, well-orchestrated campaign and were clearly
experienced and talented political strategists whose
energies could be put to good purpose for the
Republican Party to work for the common goals of
expanding the Republican base and electing capable,
responsible local Republican representatives to City
and State office.
Chairman Philip Ragusa also indicated that while it is
clear from the 3 to 1 election results that the vast
majority of Republican County Committee Members
responded positively to his own party building efforts
to date and plans for the future, his opponents had
clearly developed an appreciable following in some
parts of Queens including Forest Hills, Rego Park and
Jamaica in Southeastern Queens, which is why they
carried approximately 25% of the vote. All these
voters count. All these voters matter. Their voices
have been heard.
Chairman Ragusa stated “I ran on a platform of party
unity and growth and outreach, and I want every
Republican County Committeeman including my former
opponents and indeed every Republican voter to
recognize and appreciate that we are working hard for
them to rebuild the Republican Party and increase
Republican representation. Their ideas and energy and
commitment to Republican principles need to be
harnessed so we achieve all of our goals. Ideas for
reform and growth are welcome. I am especially
grateful to both Senators Padavan and Maltese for the
constancy of their support for my Chairmanship and for
all the Republicans in our committees who joined with
us and reelected me by such a solid margin.”
