Just Read a Book on Media (not verified) says:

Concerning the article "A Firing Raises Questions About Voice's Independence", written by John Koblin, on February 5, 2008, which covers the firing of LD Beghtol totally raises the question of papers autonomy from their parent companies. It sounds like once again the business side of the news publication is taking control of everything the publication does, leaving little or no autonomy for writers, designers or editors. And why would they do this? All in the pursuit of money I would assume.
Forget that an employee is describing his work environment as "really unpleasant" or that there even is a question that the Village Voice Media company is creating lies to cover their backs concerning an employees performance. It will be interesting if Beghtol and the union put together a lawsuit and win.
Of more concern which isn't addressed is how long Beghtol worked for The Village Voice and if he has seen a change in its business practices since employment there. It would greatly help the credibility of the article.
Last, I would say that if the environment suck at he Village Voice what are the reasons? Can employees not speak out due to fear of firing, or has the new editor of the paper Tony Ortega stopped listening to employees? Or has the paper slipped into fear of collapse and is failing to provide the news that people need?
