F. Scalzi (not verified) says:

The US movie business (studio and indie) has transformed itself into a Disney showcase that nowadays appeals only to fourteen year olds (of all ages). It is no wonder that a superb actor like Daniel Day-Lewis expects that a landmark film in which he struggles to achieve a convincing dramatic portayal will "tank". And was is correct in his assessment. It is no surprise that "There Will Be Blood" was a failure at the box office. It was intended for movie viewing adults and there are fewer and fewer of us left.
In our area (Phoenix, AZ) it screened at one, and only one, "art" theater - - nowhere else, even efter Lewis won the Golden Globe award and he and "Blood" were both nominated for Oscars.
The answer for adults who long to see movies that appeal to them is to simply stay home, rent the DVDs that promise something other than the car crashing "action" thrillers, the animated cute stuff, and the too obvious fake love stories that constitute 99% of the disappointing junk in the movie houses. Tedious, adolescent, "blockbuster" films are a waste of time and money for everyone, including the US film industry.
