Mr. Sarris,

As an occasional reader of your reviews over the years I hadn't known of your love for the Beatles, which I share. As a young aspiring teenaged musician in the mid-60's I heard the Beatles first, and then the Rolling Stones, who were my introduction to The Blues.

Unlike you, I have not only attended many live shows of most of the icons of rock & roll, but I have played some of my own with many very famous performers.

That said, I got the exact same reaction to Shine a Light as did you: it knocked me out.

The Rolling Stones are a great big disjointed, sloppy, beautiful mess, and Scorcese captured them like never before.

Indeed, you get to see them as only a musician onstage could, but even more intimately. The preview I attended was the IMAX version, and though it wasn't the full wraparound IMAX screen, it was huge, and curved.

But the SOUND! THE SOUND!!! There were times when I looked around to see who was clapping and cheering, but it was the surround-sound system playing the movie's soundtrack.

The mixing alone should get a special award, even though I had some creative differences with the producers. And the sound editing is definitely Oscar-worthy. It sounded like the band was in the room with us, and I must stress again, I know what that sounds like.
The presentation of Ron Wood's and Keith Richards' guitar sounds was perfect, and I f I can toot my own horn one more time, I have spent a lifetime in the electric guitar business.

The film presents the Stones in all their aged glory, warts and all.
