It's so easy NOT to get caught up in the parenting hype. You're spouse (ie: wife) has to be willing to go along otherwise there will be conflict. But spending too much money on mostly kid crap will be severely tested in the coming years as couples squirm to make ends meet.
Only idiot Park Slope parents are into all this garbage anyway. Real, struggling middle class parents are not going to spend 1.6 million dollars over 17 years to raise a child.
Usually it's the mothers who buy into all that crap. All it takes is a strong father/spouse figure to say, "no, we are not going buy X for little Johnny." The 70's were a lot better for raising children, and the 00's can be too, if parents just chill out and remember their childhoods.
Idiot parents.
