Unmasking Mellman
August 8, 2005 | 12:30 p.m
In the Times today, the Miller campaign debuts another kind of sourcing: fake anonymity. The male source is described as a "senior Miller strategist who also advised John Kerry last year." Unless they're being truly generous with the term "advised," that's pollster Mark Mellman, who reportedly insisted on anonymity "because he did not want to speak publicly about campaign tactics." Perhaps the D.C.-based Mellman doesn't consider the Metro Section "public." (Semi-relatedly, check out Ryan Lizza's excellent taxonomy of anonymous GOP sources in The New Republic.) (And, to give credit where it's due, Ben weighed in with this from an undisclosed location, before returning to his regularly scheduled vacation.)
