Exclusive: Spencer Says KT's a Hillary Pawn
In an interview today, Republican Senate candidate John Spencer told The Politicker he thinks Hillary Clinton put KT McFarland up to challenging him for his party's nomination.
"The Clintons are pretty slick. They'll never have any fingerprints on it, but it sure looks that way," he said. "The only beneficiary of this is Mrs. Clinton."
He said he didn't have any clear evidence of the plot, but that he found McFarland's sudden entrance amid a burst of media coverage "mystifying."
As for McFarland herself, "I don't think she has any credentials, quite frankly."
"She gets all this press coverage, which I find mystifying," he said, pointing to her Hardball appearance yesterday and Good Morning America today, not to mention an A1 slot in the Times.
And to be fair, it is a little mystifying. Spencer thinks it's because "if you're not a millionaire or a self-proclaimed celebrity, you don't get any attention." It may also have something to do with the fact that KT has an oldtime GOP power broker, Ed Rollins, working the phones for her.

Spencer needs to lay off the pipe...
Aside from the on-its-face ludicrousness of the assertion, why would she bother: she's going to trounce Spencer anyway (if, of course, she can just escape the lefty-inspired primary challenge, which really seems to be going places, and in a hurry).
Ambition is made of sterner stuff, no ?
The media loves McFarland because she's a liberal.
Wow, he is a loose cannon. Republicans may be lucky she's getting in the race....
I love a good show. Maybe I will underwrite both Republicans in this race.
That's crackers.
Spencer needs a few more Algonquins at his round table to pass some of these ideas by before he goes public with them.
It's certainly annoying that, after having been in the race for a loong time and having 40,000 donors, no one has interviewed him on any major newsmagazine, yet KT is all over the media the day she announces.
But let's be reasonable: a Pataki pawn, sure, but a Clinton one?
Spencer is just pissed that a woman -- A WOMAN -- got more press in one day than he has in his entire campaign.
Spencer's off base with his attack: it is the liberal base from within the GOP that is pushing KT. They don't want a conservative running for anything in the state this year. She is a pawn of Pataki.
Hillary? She's just sitting back and laughing ... and raising money for her presidential bid.
Seriously John Spencer, the actor from L.A. Law and the West Wing, who is dead, is more relevant than the one running for Senate.
What self-respecting human being would suffer through the indignity of being a Pataki pawn? Seriously?
