Google Grades
This is clever and, I bet, will be much-imitated.
The Drum Major Institute released today a report grading members of the state legislature on what the liberal think-tank sees as their support for the middle class: the issues in question include subsidized daycare, immigrants' access to education, and the way unions are regulated.
Anyway, it's the kind of thing that wouldn't get much attention from politicians. Unless, say, every time anyone Googles Joe Bruno's name, his grade (D, in this case) comes up.
They've bought Google Ads next to the names of every member of the Senate and Assembly. And if there's anybody who sits around googling him or herself, it's state legislators.

Apparently Serph Maltese gets an F. But you have to type in "Serphin." Didn't anybody get a good grade?
The other thing is that google ads are really cheap. You only pay when someone clicks on them. So the above link probably cost the DMI some dough.

I googled Shelly Silver and didn't see anything - and yes, I typed in 'Sheldon'
Funny, both Shelly and Sheldon Silver come up with an ad on my screen.
Ryan is in his second term. How many times does he have to stand for re-election before he's no longer "newer"?
I did Silver and it worked for both Sheldon and Shelly. One of a list of little ads on the side saying "Silver Gets and A-" How did Scott Stringer do better than his old boss?

The ads aren't just cheap because you pay to click, but also because there aren't a whole lot of competitors who want to buy to have ads next to NYS legislators. That means that DMI can have the #1 spot by a legislator at a very low per click bid. For a comparable payment per click with a more sought after spot than Joe Bruno, etc. an advertiser probable would not be at the top of page one of the search term results or even on page one.

For a comparable payment per click with a more sought after spot than Joe Bruno, etc. an advertiser PROBABLY would not be at the top of page one of the search term results or even on page one of the results.
The only think I like more than DMI's AdWords idea is the grades they gave. Nice!
