The Morning Read: April 18, 2006

Errol Louis writes about the prison population and political district lines.

The Post has it that Eliot Spitzer may endorse Andrew Cuomo; and that Mike Bloomberg may have asked Richard Parsons if he is interested in running for mayor in 2009.

And the Times tries to clear up the Weld-D'Amato feud.

The districting impact of counting prisoners as residents of the prison is also the subject of an editorial in Tuesday's New York Times:

and has been discussed at the drum major institute blog. http://www.dmiblog.net

And Errol misses a good one; they even used the scam in a City district to fill out Guy Vellella's population (I know he's gone and the seat's now Democratic, but it's the same scam)

So glad this is being covered. It should also be pointed out that the Senators with the most number of prisons in their district are the most ardent supporters of Rockefeller Drug laws.

Good article by Errol. I suggest that the Daily News reprint this article in 2012 when the state lines are redrawn.
