Responsible Development

Cristyne Nicholas, president of NYC & Company, who once called the Jets stadium proposal "a win-win for the city" is now praising Christine Quinn for her support of part of that original proposal: an expanded Javits Center.

"Speaker Christine Quinn is a strong and steady supporter of New York's travel and tourism industry, and a champion for the city's tourism workforce that makes the Big Apple shine," she said in an NYC & Company press release today entitled "Leaders from Labor, Tourism and Business Laud Speaker Christine Quinn's Support of Javits Expansion Plan."

In February of 2003, Quinn was quoted in The Observer on the Jets Stadium proposal:
"It seems somewhat unfair that the Jets are going to dump all of their corporate resources into this when they are up against unfunded community groups who are just trying to protect their neighborhood and fight for responsible development," said Council member Christine Quinn of the West Side.

So, without passing any judgement, is the Javits Center expansion "responsible development?"

"...unfunded community groups who are just trying to protect their neighborhood..." The Speaker COULD have set a precedent for responsible development but she ignored the South Bronx as the Yankees dumped more than their "corporate resources" on the neighborhood parks.

The NIMBY Quinn.

Sure. There are some issues with the particular plan Javits is pushing at the moment, but stadium opponents were always supportive of an expanded Javits. Investing in a state-run economic activity-generator is a whole lot different than subsidizing a billionaire sports team owner's profit margins.

And expanding Javits was not "part of" the stadium proposals, as evidenced by the fact that one is happening and the other isn't. Though Doctoroff's attempts to tie the two together did come close to killing a Javits expansion that nobody opposed on its own.

Boss quinn does not respect working class people. She believes she is helping the poor Bronx people.

Quinn and her ilk have gone far beyond nimby. It should be "not in my city, anywhere. The Jets stadium is a huge lost opportunity for NYC, and now we have that worthless hole over on the west side that won't ever be developed. Hey, whatever happened to the MSG offer? Oh, I forgot, they were never serious. The Jets, of course, were. Damn shame.

sorry to interrupt your rant with inconvenient facts, but the mta formally rescinded its offer to the jets and to all other bidders so the mta is the reason the msg proposal isn't happening.

the mta has been just sitting on its hole in the ground since, despite calls by quinn and many other "nimby"ers to do a non-rigged rfp and get some development going there ...

Huh? (not verified) says:

(unfunded community groups who are just trying to protect their neighborhood) definition: $50 million of Cablevision money who are just trying to protect their monopoly

CLN is unqualified to talk about Responsible Development. She should concentrate on the pending hotel union strike, the current conversion of hotels going condo, promoting tourism to the other boroughs and the lack of membership to her organization. In a city this big they only have 1500 members? Maybe she should go back to her roots in the press world for Rudy.
