Greenspun Spin-out

Ben Smith reports that Jonathan Greenspun is moving on to Mercury Public Affairs, leaving his unofficial post as the Bloomberg administration's liaison to the Jewish community.

His departure, of course, comes only a few weeks after the protests in Borough Park. In the aftermath of the demonstrations, many people in the community said they felt they had less access to the Mayor than they did under Giulliani and his chief of staff and Jewish liaison Bruce Teitelbaum.

On the other hand, Bloomberg hasn't had to make the concessions that Giuliani and Teitelbaum granted in exchange for political support from the Hasidic community.

If Bloomberg indeed goes with Tolbert, that could be taken as another blow against quid pro quo politics.

Jason,You dont know squat about politics if you decry
quid pro quo politics. That is the lifeblood of the synergy of the game.Remember, all politics is local.Perhaps you think that political pork is not kosher for the Orthodox community or political influence does not behoove them ,that is not a political reality, get with it.

Bloomberg uses people up and spits them out. Look at Lenora Fulani. She'll never get another meeting with the mayor now that he's used up her line and then got her kicked out. Now that he clearly has no more use for the Jews, no more liaison, motzetze bpeh will soon be illegal and if he had his way there will be a tax on matzah and esrogs.

I predict the mayor will astonish everyone and name Lenora Fulani the new Jewish liaison, thus bringing together the black radicals and the black hats.

ok Parker, go back to work now

6:11 pm: More likely he'll appoint Harry Kresky, Lenora's lawyer, whom he already appointed to charter review comm.

Greenspun is a class act who the mayor will miss. And if the Mayor is smart he will still consult with him on certain issues. He will be missed by all.

I wish him good luck

Has it occurred to anyone that perhaps this spells MORE ACCESS FOR BLACK PEOPLE? Rather than everything being centered around the Jewish community, perhaps it is finally being recognized by folks who are high up in the administration that other constituencies [i.e. 47% of black voters] helped get him elected.

Also, last time I checked it was not called the Jewish Community Assistance Unit - it is in place to serve all NYers, whether they be Chinese, West Indian, Puerto Rican, Korean...

A little equity is in order here, and looking at the composition of the administration's inner sanctum I say [if it happens] that its about time someone black get a position like this.

What happened to Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott? Is he still in the administration?I do believe he is a man of color.

Access to Bloomberg? HaH! you want access to the man you gotta be worth at least $100 million and do the society receptions every night. Otherwise you get nada!! Like those poor working people who got his back hand when they needed food stamps. OR the poor Housing Authority working stiffs who heaven forbid make over $20,000 a year slaving over 2 jobs and they're gonna whack em a big increase. That's your compassionate mayor. He dont give 2 squats if you be black, jewish, latino or asian cuz he wants to travel in uppity WASP circles that didnt let him in before.

Morrie (not verified) says:

Maybe the Mayor will appoint Chanina Sperlin to be Jewish liaison.

Maybe now all the rumers about Councilman Felder will become true.

I'm sure the Mayor won't dump Fred K. for Channia.
Fred is doing a great job and is very loyal to his job, so I'm sure that he will stay as the Jewish Liaison.

political rabbi (not verified) says:

teitelbaum had access to giuiliani; greenspun reported to bloomberg's scheduler - so no access. therefore, no one represented the jewish community to bloomberg and bloomberg had no one in the community to represent him (and didnt care)

bottom line question: would the jews have been happier with their access if ferrer was mayor and yeager was running things??

Dear Political Rabbi

I don't know from where you are getting your info about Greenspun.

He is a commissioner and I'm sure he reports directly.

political rabbi (not verified) says:

dear anon
SHEA FINK is his boss, period. She, not he, reports to Bloomberg. sorry to disappoint you.

Greenspun is a nice guy but has not independent political skills. The entire Jewish community people to work with elected officials who do not understand politics. So one after the other they fall in the middle of the night and everyone near them is shocked

political rabbi (not verified) says:

nice guys finish last and in this case outside of the circle at city hall and now at political consulting firm that will be on the outs once pataki leaves office...

oh. and by the way to the other anon poster, ferrer and yeger respect the jewish community and would treat them fairly, not panedering to the extremists as bloomberg has...

JC (not verified) says:

Jonathan is a very smart and hard working person. He will be successful where ever he goes. Just because he is no longer working for Bloomberg or Pataki, people think they have the right to criticize and attack him. Jonathan served the NY Jewish Community for most of his career and has helped many, many people. We should stand behind him and wish him luck. It would be a great loss to the Jewish community to loose a leader like Jonathan. Let's hope he stays involved.
