Gatemouth: Cuomo, Gruomo, Shmomo

After Andrew Cuomo's garish, painstakingly engineered walloping of his opponents in Buffalo, now what?

The polls, as we already noted, certainly don't indicate the sort of laugher that the convention results suggest. (The last Zogby poll showed Mark Green within two points of Cuomo among likely voters.)

And in the last day, we've seen a good-ish amount of traffic in comments and emails predicting the current frontrunners - the front-running, hydra-headed beast at least one commentator calls "Gruomo" - could even clear the way for a third candidate to become competitive by savaging each other and, well, just being generally annoying to people in the party.

Place of honor among these observations must be given to onetime Brodsky supporter and longtime Politicker reader Gatemouth, who the Cuomo camp will have to hope is not a leading indicator of public sentiment:

One of the greatest divendends of the Brodsky withdrawal(and I supported him)is that it opened up the opportunity for the argument amongst Cuomo and Green supporters as to which of their candidates had the biggest ego and most annoying personal chracteristics. Such arguments, if informed by the facts, are sure to be an anecdotal embrassment of riches, and serve the further purpose of allowing each side to avoid touchy questions like which of these guys is actually qualified to hold the job. And, let's not even get into the company each of them keeps keeps! Although I'd previously dismissed her, as "a good idea for a candidate", Denise O'Donell is looking better and better with each passing day.

Denise needs money and a message fast. Right now she has neither.
Speaking of message, Jeannie Pirro better refine her johnny one note criminal justice message. If she does she can win, by getting lots of dem votes.

If Denise O'Donnell gets on the ballot she has a decent shot at winning. She is from upstate, a woman and is likeable all of which will work to her advantage against Green and Cuomo. The problem she has is her lack of institutional support upstate and lack of money. If that changes, she could cause problems for both Cuomo and Green.

I just love how King and Maloney are so sidelined. Why don't they dropout?? They have no chance

Maloney is running for the future. King has money and a natural base. (I can't believe no one has written the obvious story: King would be the first black ag, and it might actually matter cause our criminal justice system is so screwed up and screws over communities of color left and right, but I digress).

I say this one goes to the wire.

Since Ben Smith left the Observer, I've had not one mention on this blog for any of my pieces on Room 8, even when I scooped the Times about the lameness of Paterson's nearly non-existent efforts to take control of the Senate. But, now that my Room 8 column is on self-imposed hiatus, you see fit to spotlight some quick comment i dropped in passiung while sipping my morning coffee. Go figure!

Cuomo has the $ and got what he wanted at the convention: the machine-delivered designee. He's mean, not too talented, and his handlers (Jenn, et al) are terrified to let him loose in public. Expect to see him once in a blue moon.

Green will petition and get on the ballot. He'll still have $ left to do some TV and hope that his downstate name recognition will make up for the rest. Expect to see him at the opening of a door.

O'Donnell has little $ and little name recognition. Expect to see her fade after an initial sprint.

Whatever Charlie has ain't going to help him. Expect him to become even more loopy.

Maloney has even less. Expect him to stick around because he's got nothing better to do.

As all the polls suggest, it's Cuomo and Green.

Why is The Politicker so pro-Green?

anon (not verified) says:

That's right! Cuomo better send Giske and crew to twist some arms at the Politicker! Go, Em, go!

Anonymous says:

Maloney is a fluke. No chance, and there is dissent in his own staff

Anonymous says:

if there is dissent in Maloney staff now wait till the petitioning starts. Wake up

true (not verified) says:

true wakeup maloney

Anonymous says:

maloney wont wakeup until the $ runs out & his staff gets sorely tired. must be horrible workin when u know your candidate is gonna loose

Gatemouth (not verified) says:

O'Donnell has just dropped out. So much for my predictions.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Its a myth that Maloney has any substance. Ever hear him answer "what have you done for New Yorkers?" -- he can't name a single thing but for a pro bono case here or there ... compare that with Green's lengthy record as a national and local reformer or Cuomo's at HUD and Maloney is really an empty suit.

Maloney = fake

He wont even get 30% of the gay vote. Pathetic
