In the 74th - Lower East Side
He is riding the Reform Albany message to the hilt. The message worked on 43rd Street, but what are people saying around East 12th Street? Koblin conducted some random interviews and has this dispatch:
I come home at night and I see all these rats and shit in the garbage cans here.
-- Christian Sordelete, 18, student at School of Visual Arts, interviewed outside his apt on 12th and A
-- Azi Paybarah
Kolbin interviews from the 74th AD:
--Florie Huppert, interviewed at e. 22 and 2nd avenue, lifelong Murray Hill residentThe school system is underfunded and there are horrible injustices. I'm lucky that I was able to go to private school and that my son will have the same benefit, but I don't think it's fair for the masses. I also have some local gripes. There are too many homeless people and the police department is disrespectful; they park wherever they want.
-- Ned Stresen-Reuter, 28, artist/bartender, interviewed at 12th and ARents are skyrocketing out of control. New York City can't just be a place for rich people to live and sometimes it seems that way. I actually have a pretty good deal now, but If I lose that, I'd be fucked; I'd have to move to Coney Island or something.
-- Muriel Weiss, 80, interviewed at the corner of 24th and 2nd avenueWhat I'm really unhappy about is that there are no parks around here. There is a park on 29th street but it smells bad, it smells like urine and there are all these bums there. The Madison Square Park is just gorgeous, it's gorgeous, but I'm always looking for a bathroom and can't find one. They don't have a ladies room.
Oh, and the bus station at 28th street for the M15 is very crowded. I think it's from all the people who walk over from First Avenue from Bellevue.

It is hilarious that Kavanagh is getting credit as the "reform" candidate when he has done absolutely nothing to reform anything.
As Carolyn Maloney said, "judge people by what they have done, not what they say they will do."
Sylvia has done a ton to reform government, including serving as the reform chair for the ny dems!
The Times clearly made their endorsement for other reasons, and just used this as an excuse.
Sylvia a reformer? Oh, give us all a break. And, hey, if you need someone to go for bat for you in the Stuy Town conversion, whom do you want? A doddering has-been or a smart young Turk?
12:04 pm is a typical Kavanagh supporter--engaging in ageism. What will a young turk do to protect Stuy Town? Prevent the sale? I don't think so. Anyway, rent stablized tenants are protected. Furthermore, Sylvia is more skilled in accomplishing what needs be done in Albany. Changing Albany does not take place on the floor of the Assembly--it takes place in committees and in Democratic Conference discussions. Sylvia is shaking up the committees. Her experience is an asset to the district.
Problems in the district do not reflect on the incumbent in office for four months. They do reflect on the Kavanagh's major endorser Steve Sanders and his 27 year reign. Sylvia has fought for parks for years. She helped create Stuy Cove. She knows education issues because she taught. That Brian has done nothing besides work for electeds and for government at a macro level shows how little he knows about the district and its concerns.
Brian could not beat Rosie Mendez last year, so now he has plopped himself down into this race, and he and his supporters are running an embarassing campaign.
You want to talk about leadership? Let's have that talk....because I don't believe someone running the kind of campaign that Kavanagh has, is capable of the leadership we'd want.
I keep hearing about "ageism" not from kavanaugh supporters, but from sylvia supporters.
Why would you hear about ageism from Kavanagh supporters? They are the ones promoting the claim that Friedman is too old for the job. I'm not sure I get the point of the comment.
Sylvia is a decent person and well intentioned, but she doesn't have the energy or the drive to get much done. Kavanagh, while he may be newer to the district, brings impressive credentials and connections. If he's half the elected official his mentor Councilmember Brewer is, the district will be incredibly lucky. I suspect he's close to a Brewer clone, in which case, he will really hit the ground running. It didn't seem from these four interviews, that these people know a race is going on in their district...
He's not a reformer, he has consultant/lobbyists on the payroll. Isay and Lasher are running his campaign the same people who work for Ratner, and the same people who put out racist fliers, and the same people who took Bloombergs money to sell the West Side Stadium.
Consultants work on every campaign - I'm not sure a persons choice of consultants has much of an impact on how they govern when elected. I know I've supported candidates who have had consultants I've found repulsive in the past.
To 12:04 - Where do you think Sylvia Friedman has been all these years? More importantly, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
Sylvia Friedman has become an Assemblywoman the hard way-- through many years of grass roots activism on the community board and local organizations. She is not someone who suddenly enters the scene within the past couple of years with a lot of money trying to get elected to office.
As for her not being a Reformer? Ask any of the people who opposed her earlier this year why they did so, and they will tell you that, based upon her past record, she was so much a Reformer that they doubted that she could even "get along" with Shelly Silver. Has Friedman changed? I doubt it.
Here's the easy question:
What makes Brian a qualified representative of the 74th District?
Sylvia has been around for 40 years, while Brian just moved here.

Oh how cute, 12:49 comes on here, a summer intern for carolyn maloney, and quotes her.
"judge people by what they have done, not what they say they will do."
As if the congresswoman was the first to say that. I like to see that kind of enthusiasm from a kid!
The fact that Kavanagh would hire Isay/Lasher tells me that... he's smart! which in turn makes me want to vote for him.
So, what are Brian's qualifications in the 74th AD?
3:48, how obnoxious of you.
Congresswoman Maloney specifically said that in her endorsement of Sylvia Friedman, which is why it was referenced.
You could have easily found that out if you had tried at all, but you clearly did not, nor care to.

HEY: "The fact that Kavanagh would hire Isay/Lasher tells me that... he's smart! "
Are you serious? Isay/Lasher are renowned for dirty campaigns and tactics. Is it smart to hire scoundrels?
If you don't realize this, you should not be commenting. You doubt this?
Google: "Michah Lasher" and "magic" and see what his fellow amateur magicians have to say about his book on magic, him, and his ethics.
Lasher can pull a pigeon from his shirt but he cannot pull this election for Kavanagh.
i just pooped my pants and am in need of a diaper...I'm sylvia friedman and I support this messgage
esther yang is the only REAL candidate in this race. she may be crazy as a shit house rat, but she'll quickly rise to the top in albany. she's just that kind of person
