Another Brooklyn Endorsement

Brooklyn Papers endorsed David Yassky for the 11th Congressional District.

Thanks to the free-for-all primary, black voters are as empowered as ever.

All candidates being equal, our preference would be that the district remains represented by a person of color, given the paucity of black faces in Congress.

But all candidates in this race are not equal, and the most important consideration is that the district elect an effective leader who can strongly defend the interests of its black majority and white minority...Wonk-like in demeanor and a bit stiff on the campaign trail, Yassky is unlike many politicos -- he actually makes a difference.

In the newspaper endorsement category, it goes:

New York Times- David Yassky Brooklyn Papers - David Yassky Our Time Press - Chris Owens Amsterdam News - Chris Owens Caribbean-American Weekly - Chris Owens [added] New York Carib News - Yvette Clarke Black Star News - Yvette Clarke Jewish Press- Carl Andrews

How does a newspaper whose main objective seems to be anti-big development, anti-Atlantic Yards, give its endorsement to Yassky of all the candidates?? Odd.

but... (not verified) says:

Paper endorsements matter less than individual and union endorsements...this election is not on that will be won or lost on a blog or in the press...it's going to come down to the field plan...so we shall see...

Gatemouth (not verified) says:

Wow! How strange. Well, as the Brooklyn Paper is fond of saying, "it's not just about the Nets."

Anonymous says:

Looks like Yassky's picking up support all over the district- News 12 shows him marching in Brownsville last night, he got Brooklyn Papers, and the Post says he's getting the Crown Heights PAC. Not too bad...

Nassau Nell (not verified) says:

...so the DAILY NEWS can do a Sunday endorsement and really give somebody momentum...whom will it be?

Strict Grammarian (not verified) says:

Nell, you are a little too fond of the word "whom". "Who" is the proper word when it's the subject of the phrase or sentence, dear; "whom" when it's object, as in "the question is to whom the Daily News will give its endorsement."

Anonymous says:

Did anyone read their reason for not giving him the endorsement? It made it looked rigged-- he's so great, he said this, he's this and that-- but anyway, we endorse David Yassky.

It sounded like it was rigged!

BigRedOne (not verified) says:

A question. Why does Yassky seem to be doing so well? On the council he is just another white-bread pol who didn't even have the starch to oppose a Brooklyn Law School rip-off expansion in his own district. On paper, he looks to be inferior to Chris Owens, at least. He even takes a back seat to Carl Andrews. Sure, he's connected to the Clintons and Rahm-bo Emmanuel, but when did that become a good thing? Is the thinking that somebody has to stop the Yvettemobile? And that it's Yassky? Say it ain't so!

jake (not verified) says:

Chris Owens was also at the Brownsville March walking right next to Yassky. Its funn yhow the media missed that????

News 12 is so impartial.....

Pardon me, but on what paper? The papers you rolled just before you got high and posted here?

Look, I can totally understand being against Yassky on principle, too pro-development, etc. But "on paper", he's the only candidate who has actually worked on Capitol Hill and helped write and pass three phenomenal progressive bills! Chris has never held elected office! Carl and Yvette have at least some legislative experience, but DY has the most, and the only experience in D.C.

Let's try to have some connection to reality, here, folks....

ali (not verified) says:

Yassky has got the endorsements because he's been able to get things done. He didn't lie to like Yvette, and he isn't relying on nepotism like Owens.

Anonymous says:

LOL to BigRedOne -- yeah, those Clintons, who are they? Certainly the son of a mediocre Congressman and a Brooklyn machine hack have accomplished much more for the country and the party than the Clintons!

How did Carl Andrews get the Jewish Press endorsement??? Anyone know?

billy (not verified) says:

Yassky has Bloomberg and Schumer behing him. So he has two daddys.

Also he knows two editors at the NY times and Ratner is building the NY times new building. So you do the math on the endorsement??!?!?!?!?

tommy (not verified) says:

Tassky knew two of the editors and ratner is building the ny times new building?!?!?!

Wow big money is bad for D.C. and Brooklyn...

but he still will lose.... LOL

Juan Estaplero (not verified) says:

If NYT wanted to keep Bruce Ratner happy (and why would they? they are HIS client, he worries about keeping THEM happy) they would have endorsed Andrews or Clarke, who support AY uncritically. DY wants it scaled way back. There's no way FCR was happy with this endorsement, if he cares, which he doesn't, because AY is local/state issue, not a federal one. Think, people, think!

Yassky is a schmuck, pretending that he's Chuck Schumer. He's not, not by a long shot.

Borough Park Blogger (not verified) says:

AND Yassky gets the endorsement today of the Crown Heights Political Action Committee at a City Hall press conference with PAC Chair Rabbi Shea Hecht. The PAC used to be a one-man show, but the new leadership has brought the real community leaders to turn out the Yassky vote, just as they did a record vote for Bloomberg.

adam (not verified) says:

Chris Owens will take a lot of white votes from Yassky and whoever has the better GOTV between Yvette and Carl will win

Bot Chanina (not verified) says:

O TOLD you weeks, maybe evena months ago, that the Crown Heights Jews would go with Yassky. Now they have. There was never a question.

And to that last poster...Owens may take "a lot" of white voters from Yassky, but not nearly as many Black voters tas Yassky will take from the three others.

And, BTW, Hasidic Jews do not register in polling, so jigger Yassky up a few points if you are scoring at home.

11thouraceanalyst (not verified) says:

the reason that carl andrews got the endorsement of the jewish press is because of his relationship with dov hikind. dov is endorsing andrews and is not particularly fond of yassky but it will be interesting to see how carl does in jewish areas and it will be a test of dov hikind's ability to influence votes.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

As a Yassky volunteer, I speak to black and Carribean voters about the race every day. Roughly half are voting for Yassky, the other half split among the other three.

Chris will take a lot of white votes from Yassky.

All the Jews (those who are registered Dems anyway) are voting for Yassky. Please.

Arthurone (not verified) says:

YASSKY VOLUNTEER (ABOVE) SAYS ..... he knows HALF of Black and Caribbean voters are for Yassky.... PLEASE somebody get this guy his medication ... before he gets carted off to the Looney Farm.

Nassau Nell (not verified) says:

..at this point its all about GOTV and Carl Andrews has the best operation of the four.

morkfrombrooklyn (not verified) says:

If the "Yassky volunteer" is any indication of the folks Yassky has working for him he's in a world of trouble.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

he knows HALF of Black and Caribbean voters are for Yassky

I didn't say that. I don't "know" anything for sure - I'm just telling you what voters tell me. Do they tell me what I want to hear cuz I'm with DY, but will actually vote for one of the other three? That's possible! I guess we'll find out on Sept. 12.

But I wonder where you get all your certainty, Arthurone? I assume that you, like me, have spent almost every day for the past four months speaking face to face with thousands of black and Carib voters in the 11th? What are they telling you?

mole333 (not verified) says:

To Juan Estaplero:

You have some facts wrong. BOTH Yassky AND Chris have worked in Washington for sitting Congressmen. And Chris was elected to school board where he served with distinction in a very difficult situation.

I wish the Yasskyites would stop blogging from the same tired talking points. It makes Yassky seem like he's using Republican tactics. No one questions that Yassky has his own qualifications...as do each of them. His legislative record is so-so and his experience pretty much is on par with the others. The arrogant "oh, but Yassky is perfect" line is a bit tiresome.
