The Primaries and 2009

So how did the prospective 2009 mayoral contenders fare in the 2006 races?

Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson backed Andrew Cuomo. But with a 20-point victory, who takes credit for that?

In Brooklyn, Thompson backed losing candidate Carl Andrews in the 11th congressional district. Quinn stayed neutral there. Anthony Weiner and Betsy Gotbaum backed the winner, Yvette Clarke. Gotbaum was among a hundred women endorsing Clarke, while Weiner brought the John Murtha endorsement.

Adolfo Carrion seems to have stayed out of the major races, but did back John Sabini, who squeaked out a win.

What the significance of any of this is in terms of chits to be redeemed at a later date, well, you tell us.

Weiner's endorsement of Clarke was gutsy and he should be saluted for it; But did he do it because he was Nostrodamus, or because 1199 told him to?

Thompson wasn't so concerned with whether his guy won (did he ever campaign with him anywhere?), so much as continuing to do whatever the County organization tells him to. So he's still got chits with whomever's not in jail by 2009.

It is the down ballot 2009 races that are going to have some real interesting blood letting after last night.

Kavanagh's win is a blow to Quinn who backed Friedman...now there's an elected official in Manhattan who is not loyal to Quinn. Big winner of day is Anthony Weiner. Truth is, for Billy, better to have Carl out of politics than in Congress.

Anonymous says:

Weiner didn't just back Clarke, he campaigned with her all over the place and was the emcee at her victory speech. Not sure Carrion, in making a similar play with Sabini, pulled out any such stops, but he gets credit with the Queens organization for his thoughtfulness.

The nation is better off with an Andrew's lose.

Didn;t Cuomo give a big thanks to Carrion last night?

Anonymous says:

Yeah, Azi, I seem to remember Carrion being with Cuomo long before Quinn and Thompson were. In fact looking at Cuomo's webpage he is was a state co-chair Mayor Brown.

Anonymous says:

True. Carrion was a Co-chair of Cuomo's campaign. Did you not see the "Eliot's Choes" ad?

um..Shoes.

That's Shoe Business (not verified) says:

Yeah, but Adolfo got photoswapped out in favor of Jerry Nadler in the mailing that went to Manhattan primes. Others, like Rangel, Ferraro and (Carolyn) Maloney, were in all the "shoes" mailings, at least all the ones I saw. I kid you not.

choes? that you toopie?

Betsy Gotbaum was a big loser Tuesday, just because she's a big loser everyday.

Brute (not verified) says:

What you are not factoring into the Weiner endorsement of Clarke is the fact that screwing the people that help them the most is the Clarke family tradition. So Weiner is the big loser for investing political capital into someone who cannot be trusted in the least and against the advice of his core Jewish constituency who are still not trusting of Clarke's stand onIsrael based on her support of the Barron resolution on the Mid East.

Chris Quinn for Mayor ? Thats pretty funny. I can see Anthonys commercials now with footage that is all over town of Quinn topless showing off her grotesque body in front of St. Patricks Cathedral. Yeah, white ethnics, Jews, blacks and Latinos will run to the polls to vote for the topless candidate. Disgusting.

Queens Dem (not verified) says:

"Queens Dems despise Weiner"???

Well, this Queens Dem was at Weiner's community leader breakfast last Sunday - which was dominated by Democrats close to the borough organization - and this naive soul did not detect any hatred. Quite the contrary.

Can you imagine? "Mayor Wiener" despite the name still tough on crime.
