Thompson Gets a Meeks
The newest member of City Comptroller Bill Thompson's press staff is Ebony Meeks, daughter of Queens Congressman Greg Meeks.
She had worked on David Paterson's [corrected] last campaign, according to the comptroller's spokesman Jeff Simmons, and did a "fantastic job."
"She has experience pitching stories, setting up interview, researching and enjoyed working with the media on a daily basis," he said.
According to Simmons, two other people applied for the job after seeing it advertised on the comptroller's web site, but unlike Meeks, they had not worked on the campaign and weren't as well qualified.
Update: Meeks worked on Paterson's campaign, not Thompson's, Simmons said. More importantly, the two other people who applied for the job "didn't have the experience or credentials." Meeks has a degree in journalism from Howard University. -- Azi Paybarah
Considering that Thompson had no serious opponent, how does one determine that someone did a "fantastic job?

Yea what is going on with the at NY1? What role did simmons play in this problem?
It is not the cancer of reporting when so called reporters become flacks for elected officials or lobbyist. Is it not the wish of most reporters to become lobbyists like Bob Leff or George Arzt and make big bucks?
Jeff Simmons is a man of integrity. He did nothing wrong and he does a great job for Comptroller Thompson.

Interesting that the Observer writes about the Rivera family of the Bronx like its a wonderful dynasty and then tries to taint Rep. Meeks' daughter going to work for Bill Thompson.
Maybe Jared should ask Charles permission to do stories about family.

Meeks' sister used to work for Councilwoman Tish James as her point person against the Ratner Nets and Housing projects in Brooklyn.

Meeks daughter didn't work for Thompson, she worked for David Paterson's campaign for LT. Gov. I know first hand that she was one of the hardest working individuals on his staff. She never pulled a "I'm the daughter of a Congressman" attitude.
Azi should fact check a little better.
Ask any reporter on the campaign beat this past year if Ebony Meeks did a good job for David Paterson. She is extremely bright and energetic and experienced. Thompson definitely is on the positive side of the ledger on this one.
I got to see Ebony in action when she was working on David Patterson's campaign, and I didn't know who her father was. I was impressed.
Say what you will about Jeff. Fact is he's great at his job and is a wonderful person.

I know and love Jeff Simmons. He's a completely stand-up guy, is too bright to want to do a knucklehead thing like he's accused of doing and doesn't have the Photoshop skills to do it anyway! Don't believe everything you read in the Post.
I concur. As awesome as Jeff is, doctoring photos is a little outside of his job skills. Guy can hardly use his blackberry.

Jeff Simmons is a professional, responsible individual of the highest integrity. This issue has been blown way out of proportion by the media and some hateful people who want nothing more than to be the limelight by cutting a forward thinker off at the knees.
Jeff Simmons has no clue about running a mayorial campaign. I do not know who is more clueless Simmons or thompson for hiring him.
