Stonewall's New President: Matt Carlin

Having control of the state Senate flip from Republicans to Democrat would "absolutely" help get a same-sex marriage law passed this year, said Matthew Carlin, the newly elected president of Stonewall Democrats.

Carlin, an attorney in Manhattan, was elected last night.

Carlin told me last night that one of the club's first priorities under his leadership would be to help put Democrats in control of the state Senate by electing Craig Johnson on Long Island. The club is planning a fund-raiser and volunteer drive in the coming days.

Disgruntled Queens Queen (not verified) says:

Congratulations to Matt and to outgoing President Dirk McCall! Last night's meeting ran very smoothly, despite State Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith's last-minute no-show. After also skipping the 400-plus people at the Queens GLBT Winter Pride event in Astoria on Saturday - where nearly every other elected official from Queens plus the Comptroller, three Members of Congress, and Council Speaker were all in attendance, Senator Smith, what gives? You got Tom Duane's vote, now we can bask in your reflected glory, but only from afar?

Matt is going to be great! Stonewall remains in good hands and will do well. I think this is the fourth outer-boro President they've had in a row now, no?

Radical Democrat (not verified) says:

Matt's to the right of Attila the Hun.

Another right of center Stonewall Prez what can we expect!

At least Mr. Love Dirk McCall will be gone!

Radical Democrat: Considering how much money I gave to Howard Dean, I think you've mistaken me for someone else. I keep a bandage under my shirt to keep my permanently bleeding heart from staining my clothes.

Personal politics aside, the Board has a great diversity of opinion, and I have to answer to it.

As to Dirk, he's one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life and he's staying on the Board.

Wasn't Fran Reiter once the President of Stonewall?

Oh no it's just been one man after another man after another man.

Oh but there's always good ole Connie and Aubrey. Yee ha those good ole gals give us all the diversity we need!

Pat(ricia) Hayes was Stonewall President and odds are that Yetta Kurland takes the helm after Matt Carlin.
