Adding and Subtracting Names on East Side

City Hall News has a wrap-up of the East Side Assembly race I, and you, have been obsessing over.

Among the names the paper adds to the mix is former City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, who "would have a free ride to the Democratic nomination if he wanted it, has not closed the door entirely." On the Republican Side, City Hall News floats the names of Nick Viest, who ran for City Council there and lost; and Joel Zinberg, the doctor with a law degree who lost his Council race to Jessica Lappin.

But most interesting is the line the departing Assemblyman Pete Grannis, who said he doesn't think his own chief of staff, Tony Morenzi, will enter the race.

"For his part, Grannis said he will probably back a candidate eventually, and--though he believes Morenzi will pass on the race--would probably back his chief of staff in the race."

Just My Two Cents (not verified) says:

Tony's a good man. If I were he, however, I would secure a senior position at DEC, where both a higher salary and a better opportunity to influence public policy and engage in meaningful public service would probably be available than in serving as a junior Assembly member. But that's just my two cents. Tony's certainly entitled to run!

Gifford would be great...

EMB (not verified) says:

Let's not forget Micah Kellner. He's running too.

Questioning (not verified) says:

Forgive my ignorance. How do candidates register for this race and will it be on an official BOE website or something?

Watch & Wait (not verified) says:

Technically, there is not even a vacancy in the Assembly yet. So I think the short-term answer is, there is no real way of seeing who is officially raising money, or even running. At least that's my understanding of things as they stand right now.

Shelly Silver's arrogance is going to make this race competitive for a GOP candidate who has some $$

anon (not verified) says:

What nonsense from 4:36. You think the electorate at large even knows who Silver is. Seeing the heavy role Spitzer is playing in the Johnson Senate race one would be hard pressed to say that he wouldn't be active for whoever emerges as the Democratic nominee. Maybe the Republican can run with Bush -- should be a very popular duo in the district.

giff was useless, would be useless.

Look Harder in Your Trunk (not verified) says:

Zinberg proved to be a pretty lousy candidate who got stomped despite receiving the Times endorsement. I hope that 4:36 pm has somebody else in mind. You can't beat somebody with nobody, elephants!

Another Silver hack will get elected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kellner worked for the Congresswomen, didn't he? With her support, he will win the county committee vote and, therefore, the special election. Not that pretty to look at, since he walks along with some type of gimpy limp, but is smart and clever. I understand he was one of the brainchilds behind the Bing win a couple of years ago.

Micah's a hack. All the other Dem candidates mentioned would be far superior.

Paul Nelson (not verified) says:

7:48pm- That was outrageous. You should be ashamed for making fun of his disability. That's disugsting and low and you really should apologize for that (and use your full name.) Let's judge people only on their intelligence, integrity and how hard they work.

Anonymous says:

I agree; we would be looking for a legislator, not an athlete. That said, I know nothing about the candidate.

7:48pm --- THAT COMMENT IS TOTALLY DISGUSTING!
I agree with Mr. Nelson.

Actually, Micah has long been an advocate for the rights of the disabled. Another one of his attributes as a candidate.

Who has the support of the elected officials?
