More (Pre-)Endorsements for Assembly
Another development in the Assembly race that's not quite underway:
City Councilman Dan Garodnick and Assemblyman Jonathan Bing have endorsed Micah Kellner.
Kellner is running against Susan Chamlin, an aide to state Senator Liz Krueger.

It's becoming pretty obvious that Micah Kellner has the strongest support from Democrats both inside the 65th A.D., in particular on the chronically underserved Roosevelt Island, as all as all across the rest of New York County.
Looks like Kellner is wrapping this one up. he clearly has the most grass roots support in the district and from prominent East Side figures who represent the district and neighboring districts. The same people he will need to work closely with to properly represent the constituency.
Maybe Krueger can re-endorse Chamlin again to give the image of campaign momentum.
This will be a great victory for New York's enormous and under-represented community of people with disabilities. There's nothing quite like having one or more of your own at the bargaining table!

These attacks are just silly. I am placing my bets that Grannis isn't going anywhere thanks to Joe Bruno.
What attacks are those, 1:44 p.m. Sounds like, as in the Geico commercial, somebody woke up on the wrong side of the rock!
It looks like most of the Exec Board on Staten Island will be supporting Danny Lavelle for the Assembly seat his dad held when he passed away. While we all have sympathy for the family is that the best way for the community to be served? The nomination by the exec board is basically an election to the office as no one will stand in opposition at the county level, there is no petitioning, and it is a heavily Democratic district.
No one can find a reason to support Danny Lavelle other than his Dad was the Assemblyman but why should this be enough?
Micah Kellner and Susan Chamlin are both terrific people. I wish that both could serve in the Legislature, honestly. But Micah clearly has overwhelming grass roots and political support -- I hope that saying so isn't taken as an attack on anybody!

Grannis doesn't deserve anything but a swift and speedy confirmation. I hope that Liz starts focusing on that instead of what is really starting to look like a lost cause.
The 65th AD political clubs (Lenox Hill and East Side), have absolutely no power or influence, and Grannis and Krueger ignore them because they are nothing but wastes of time.
Micah Kellner is a terrific guy. He is smart, passionate about the issues New Yorkers care about, and has been active throughout the city. As a long time activist in the LGBT and Manhattan Democratic politics I can attest to the fact that Micah has paid his dues. He will make a great member of the Assembly. I have never heard of or met his opponent.
Except right now, 3:20 pm, except right now. I'm betting that the good Senator wishes she and her candidate had either not ignored those clubs (or at least bothered to pick up the phone to one of their district leaders so that they could have joined the County Committee with no other effort!), or introduced or co-sponsored even one piece of legislation to change special election in the five years they have been working in the legislature. Instead, they did absolutely none of these basic things. And for that, 3:20 pm, the Senator and her candidate are paying a very heavy price right now.
"Stonewall Dem": Micah's gay?
He is a dues-paying member of the Stonewall Democratic Club as I are a lot of elected officials, including I think Carolyn Maloney, Jonathan Bing, and Dan Garodnick. I don't think Susan is a member. Of course, she's not on County Committee, and neither is Senator Krueger, although every other elected official on the East Side belongs to County Committee, so that's hardly a surprise.
All of which is to say that Ms. Chamblin may have been good at advising the good Senator on issues, but she didn't really immerse herself in the community. The Democratic clubs do control this particular process -- but any process would have revealed deeper support for Micah. Micah got involved, pure and simple. And when it comes right down to it, isn't that what you want from a politician?

Maybe the clubs would be more vigorous if people like Liz Krueger and Pete Grannis did something to build them up. Instead they expect others to do their bidding when they want something -- like installing a successor for Pete. Neither has had to fight hard for re-election so it is understandable that they would see themselves as above petty politics. Now they are paying the price for ignoring the grass roots in contrast to leaders like Carolyn Maloney and Jonathan Bing who always are tending the base.
It iss obvious that Bing, Brice, and all the little UES minions are posting these comments aimed at cutting down Krueger and Grannis. they go up to Albany and actually work on legislation and reform.... not focusing on lameduck clubs outdated election processes or kissing up to special interest groups for money

How's Liz and Susan's effort to "actually go up to Albany and actually work on legislation" to reform special election law going? Somehow they just never seemed to get around to it, 5:20 p.m. -- what's the excuse for that, or for their never bothering to join the County Committee?

Like Liz (or anyone else) is going to reform the election law? Who says that it needs reforming? The law is fine. These are political party nominations and, as such, will involve grassroots politics. Liz is a policy wonk (as is Susan) and therefore is not all that much interested in the grassroots efforts.
Seriously, whats up with the attacks on Susan and Liz? It is really pathetic and doesn't add up.
Everyone on the East Side admires the work of ALL of our elected officials. Maloney, Krueger, Bing, Grannis, Garodnick and Lappin are all reform oriented leaders that do the area proud.
That being said, some of the defenses of Krueger and Grannis here are astounding. It is possible, even essential, for politicians to work the base and be policy oriented at the same time. Nobody has a beef with Krueger being policy oriented (although that job at the DSCC was certainly political in nature). What people have a problem with is her swooping in to annoint her aid as a successor to Pete Grannis over someone who has been active in the community and expecting the grassroots people get on board after she has ignored them.
No kidding. What's with the attacks on Bing and other supporting Micah Kellner? The fact that Micah is winning the race so far is not really a good reason for such bitterness.
The nasty comment from the Kreuger/Grannis camp devolves from the fact that both are smarmy egotistical dilitantes who don't want to get their little hands dirty talking to the common folk who (gasp!) carry their petitions and wind the nuts and bolts of local politics. As for Susan, the best you can say is that she was dopey enough to get caught in this vise -- and then refuse to say she would support the winner of the Democratic nomination. Yeah, sure, that's the way to win the hearts of your party.

Also, I wanted to discuss the reform angle for a second. The election law for filling vacancies is what it is and is not going to change prior to the special election should it occur.
Micah Kellner is on the record as wanting to change the current procedure from nominating for vacancies through the county committee to a primary followed by a general election. Where is Susan Chamlin on this? Have she and Liz been fighting for this change in the State Senate?

there's something to be said for a candidate who hasn't spent their entire professional career plotting their way into office. unfortunately, this seems to be all the posters on this site seem to care about, which might explain why these so-called clubs have 5 members each mostly consisting of central city council staff.
What is the matter with someone deciding they want to serve in elected office and proceeding to do what is necessary to get elected to that office? The clubs have larger memberships and a broader range of people than the last poster states. Don't denigrate what you don't know.
