Analyzing Eugene's Win

An informed reader emailed over a rough breakdown of the results of Tuesday's special Council election in Brooklyn.

It turns out that Mathieu Eugene's union-backed victory was just as thorough as the overall numbers indicated. He was the top vote-getter in nearly all of the Assembly districts that lie at least partly within the Council district.

The only one he lost was the 44th Assembly District in Park Slope.

A more detailed analysis should be ready by Friday when the city's Board of Elections finalize the results. But here, according to my source, is how the order of finish broke down:

42nd Assembly District - Flatbush, Midwood Mathieu Eugene (almost 50 percent) Jennifer James Wellington Sharpe Richie Leithland 43rd Assembly District - Crown Heights/Flatbush Mathieu Eugene Jennifer James Wellington Sharpe Jesse Hamilton 44th Assembly District - Park Slope Harry Schiffman Moe Ravzi Joel Toney Mathieu Eugene 57th and 58th Assembly Districts - Clinton Hill, Brownsville Mathieu Eugene Wellington Sharpe Jennifer James/Jesse Hamilton (close 3/4th) -- Azi Paybarah

Azi:

are you really that lame?

Yes, the 44th does contain a good deal of Park Slope, but none of that area is in the 40th Councilmanic. As you, of all people should know, because you live there, the 40th CD portion of the 44th AD is in Flatbush; plac like Ditmas Park.

When are you going to grow up?

And the name is Leithland Tulloch, and there is no piece of either Clinton Hill or Brownsville in the 40th CD.

Geeez

Hey 10:03 and 10:05-

I think Azi was referring to the ADs as a whole, not the intersection of the CD and the AD. Keep your righteous indignation for when it is deserved. Do you really think Azi was trying to say that Clinton Hill and Brownsville are one neighborhood inside the 40th?

Joe Spiez (not verified) says:

From Errol Louis' column, it bears repeating though, Eugene does not live in the district.

"There is no requirement that a candidate be a resident of the district at the time of the filing of the petition," the court ruled. "The only requirement is that the candidate be a resident at the time of the election."

That seems clear enough - but it means that, unless he went apartment hunting on Election Day, Eugene wasn't a resident when voters put him in. And at least one election lawyer with no stake in the race has suggested to me that Eugene might not be eligibl

Azi

Sorry, Harriet, but there is no ambiguity there. Azi really does know where the district is, even though he lives in it and covers it.

And if he does know, he should not post items which only insiders could accurately interpet.

And, anyway, the overwhelming majority of the 44th AD is in Flatbush.
