why does azi paybarah have such a big crush on charles barron?

Maybe someone should tell Baron that communism is not cool and he should join reality...and where a tie

Fidel (not verified) says:

bloomberg is an undercover racist (the worst kind) and the police dept. under his leadership is the worst example of that.

Baron is right, Kelly must go.

A white admirer (not verified) says:

Go Charles Go.

Charles Barron is a clown.

Thank God for term limits, Charles Barron will be back washing windshields outside the Holland Tunnel in 2010

Bloomberg hired a spy -- ex-CIA spook David Cohen -- not a cop, to head NYPD intelligence. City cops shouldn't be happy that they're being turned into our very own Stasi.

Charles Baron is a rascist, press hound that has done nothing but try and cause problems and ruin this city

Can this guy ever be taken seriously?

Will Charles Baron ever be held accountable for welcoming Zimbabwe's brutal and barbaric dictator, Robert Mugabe, to be honored at New York City Hall a few years ago?

As Mr. Barron claims to stand for justice, he needs to admit that he made a serious mistake by welcoming Robert Mugabe - a leader infamous for overseeing government-sponsored repression, beating, torture, rape and murder of countless people - and children - in Mugabe's own country who do not agree with him or his style of government.

Charles Barron is so quick to appear in front of any tv camera at the mere suggestion or hint of possible police misconduct or abuse in this city or county. We all read about the evidence of an opposition leader in Zimbabwe who was illegally arrested and brutally abused by Zimbabwe police - can we even expect for there to be a comment from Mr. Barron about Zimbabwe's leader, Mugabe - or should we just wait for him to invite Mugabe back for another celebratory visit to NYC?

This may not seem relevant to everyone, but Mr. Barron's ideas about peace and justice are incredibly inconsistent.

Fidel (not verified) says:

Yeah, but this doesn't change the fact that bloomberg is an undercover racist and that the police aren't supposed to be used for spying on local politicians. What exactly is the purpose of spying on Baron and other minority politicians who believe bloomberg and kelly are racists?

The NYPD thinks nothing of violating the civil rights of non whites in NYC and the mayor is ok with ignoring civil rights and breaking the law as long as it's done against non whites and immigrants, the NYPD's record is appalling when you look at the way they've conducted themselves and with very little change from the time of Giuliani, who sucks also.

This mayor, by the numbers has a worse record in dealing with minority non white issues than Giuliani.

Btw bribing Floyd Flake and few ministers in Queens isn't the solution either.

Ignoring civil rights is NOT ok anywhere in the world. If Mr. Barron is a true advocate for civil rights and not just a desperate nay-saying malcontent, he would not embrace and celebrate an oppressor of any city or country. Not would the other Councilmembers who joined him at the Red Room on September 12, 2002.

He has a great chance right now to jump in front of any camera and make a statement about Mugabe the same way other true leaders internationally are doing. He's in the city that hosts both the UN - his voice will be heard - and he's the one who hosted Mugabe - a brutal dictator - at City Hall.

If Mr. Barron doesn't oppose Robert Mugabe and his record and admit this great mistake, he's nothing more than a fake.

Fidel (not verified) says:

But that still doesn't excuse dirty illegal tricks by bloomberg and the police dept.

Stop the Mugabe nonsense, no one really cares when bloomberg and kelly are violating the rights of non whites and minorities. Very creepy.

Barron has openly voiced his support for Hugo Chavez, and Robert Mugabe. Lets take a brief look at those two men:

Chavez presides over Venezuela, where he has taken control of the court system, media, and the military. He has closed off its economy while nationalizing the oil industry. Freedomhouse.org gives them a 4 out of 7, with 7 being the lowest amount of freedom.

Mugabe rules over Zimbabwe, which rates a 7 out of 7 because of their threats of violence and rape towards anyone who opposes his political party. Oh yeah, and the life expectancy in Zimbabwe is 41. Enough said.

So when you say "Mugabe nonsense", perhaps you should take a closer look at the dictators and thugs Charles Barron supports.

The Mugabe nonsense? Were South Africa's apartheid and Rwanda's slaughters nonsense too?

New York City has an important role in international matters. There are people suffering TREMENDOUSLY and being ignored by NYC officials whose voices have somehow been silenced.

On March 11, Mugabe's militia, police and CIO held another country-wide military retribution of atrocities to crush freedom fighters and democracy seekers. This is serious - it has been going on for years and is getting worse.

If Mr. Barron thinks anyone will respect his judgment of how any police should act after standing shoulder to shoulder with Mr. Mugabe, brutal tyrant who controls a brutal police force, without admitting that it was a mistake - he should be held accountable.

Any comments Mr. Barron has about police brutality will never be taken seriously. The problems of police brutality and racism we have in this City are serious, but he's not the one to speak about them considering his own actions and inactions.

Fidel (not verified) says:

Really no one cares about mugabe when bloomberg, kelly and the NYPD have run amok. Now please cut out the broken record mugabe nonsense.

Baron is only concerned about his standing in minority communities not the shrinking white community.

Barron opposes the war, as did the two other council members. It's not their race the city's spies care about, it's their antiwar position.

We should be worried that the city started large scale spying on New Yorkers who oppose the war. When Bush invaded Iraq in 2003, 77% of New Yorkers opposed the war. That means a lot of us are under their lens.

The facts about Mugabe are not nonsense, nor is highlighting the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe and the suffering of millions of displaced refugees there.

Charles Barron embraced Robert Mugabe, the brutal leader of Zimbabwe, as a City official He invited him to be welcomed and celebrated at OUR City Hall.

After Mr. Barron returned from his supposed fact-finding (junket) trip to Zimbabwe, he has yet to oppose the horrors that Robert Mugabe has inflicted upon his people BY HIS POLICE DEPARTMENT during a ruthless 7-year campaign.

If that's where Mr. Barron is coming from, there is NO WAY that New Yorkers can respect his views on police brutality, or much else.

Those are the hard facts that should need to be addressed.

Fidel (not verified) says:

The NYPD does care about race, that's why their stop and frisk program doesn't target whites, at all.

Anonymous says:

Wow - listen to Charles Barron speak about police surveillance of minority candidates ...

Who does he think they use in Zimbabwe to oppose his friend Robert Mugabe's opponents?

Answer: THE POLICE!

Don't they call this talking out of both sides of your mouth?

Anonymous says:

Fidel, agreed about the stop and frisk program: that's definitely about race. Of the 500,000 stopped last year I have no doubt 99% were people of color. But the new intelligence program is aimed at the antiwar movement, and apparently the NYPD has decided to spend New Yorkers' tax money monitoring groups around the country. How generous of Mayor Bloomberg!

Mugabe anon: We know you're white and don't care a fig about Africans. You only use one black man to defame another. You've had your say; now spare us. We heard you: brutal! ruthless! enough!

Anonymous says:

The Mugabe/Barron MISTAKE is something that Mr. Barron can use right now to champion his cause if he cares to step up to the mike and speak up for people's rights.

He could gain great respect from so many people here in NY and all over the world if he would speak for the rights of the suffering people in Zimbabwe who are governed by one of the world's most brutal tyrants. Why shouldn't that be part of the real discussion? It would be a great way forward.

Brutality, ruthlessness, thuggery, surveillance and police brutality are all tied together. You can't say it's ok in one place and not ok in another. It's not ok anyplace.

If he doesn't speak up, Mr. Barron should consider that he appears to be ignoring the rights of millions of suffering people in Zimbabwe who are governed by his friend, Robert Mugabe, and may very well be exploiting the rights of NY'ers for his own personal fame - not giving a flying fig about race relations or police brutality anywhere on the planet.

Anonymous says:

Look, Barron is not exactly my favorite elected official, but the idea of the NYPD spying pre-RNC on elected officials without any apparent basis seems outrageous. Of course the NYPD refuses to releae the documents to back up their assertion that this spying was necessary for our security.
