Vallone on NYPD Surveillance: Barron Needs Watching
On the still-hot topic of the NYPD's undercover surveillance leading up to the Republican National Convention in 2004, I' got a couple of starkly different reactions from members of the City Council.
Charles Barron, who was one of three current or former Council members named in the police report, was outraged to have been the target of a spy operation. But Peter Vallone, Jr. told me, essentially, that he had it coming, saying that "any group Charles Barron is associated with" probably should be monitored.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing that he has NOT been associated with dictators who use violence and rape against their own people. But Charles Barron, he's okay with that.

People should be encouraged to email Vallone (www.nyccounil.info) for standing up and speaking out against Barron. He is nothing but a thug and the City as a whole will be better off when he is out of office.

Barron is going to be around for a long time and he has strong support outside of the white community.

Until you have clear proof that Vallone, or anyone else for that matter, has a connection or supports dictators like Barron does, don't make pointless accusations.
Did you forget how this argument began; that the NYPD collected intelligence on protesters of the RNC in 2004. That group was predominently white, and yes, the NYPD did keep them under control. The City did not need a repeat of Seattle's WTO riots, and was still on high alert as a result of 9/11.

There has not been a terrorist attack since 9/11. The people that were spied on prior to the RNC had no idea it was happening, so to say that he knows nothing about surveillance and intelligence is another bogus lie. And if a threat is issued, and later found to be false, so what? Nobody dies because of that.

It was an intelligence gathering program to track those who could incite violence during the RNC. A majority of the people tracked in the program were white. If by blacks and minorities you mean "3 councilmembers and people with terrorist connections" then yes, they probably did track them. And it was a good thing they did.

Barron, Perkins and Seaborn were spied on by the NYPD because they attended ANTIWAR events. Non-white electeds opposed the war.
Every person of color in New York City's congressional delegation voted against the war. The only exception among our white representatives was Jerry Nadler, who just happens to represent the district that includes the World Trade Center.
