The ONLY Question: What Did Materazzi Say to Zidane?
I'm no soccer nut, but this morning I frantically searched Yahoo news without satisfaction to learn what Marco Materazzi said to Zidane to generate the most important moment in the '06 World Cup. Then two friends emailed me with the same thing on their minds. Here's Greg McNair from the Netherlands:
Everybody (meaning me) wants to know what Materazzi said to Zidane to set him off like that. One British report speculates that Materazzi called him a terrorist. I think the dude said somethin' about his Momma. Others speculate on a racist comment. (Zidane's peeps come from Algeria.) Did I say Italian opera, damn, this was damn near Shakespeare for Zidane.
Let's be clear: this is the ONLY THING anyone who loves sports cares about today. What will Materazzi admit to? What will Zidane say? Who will be believed? How will it all unfold? I can't wait.
This is bigger than the hand of god in '86. It's the tongue of god, and the head of god...

Text beinf spread thru the net:
Zidane : Ordinanza di tirare il costume!! / Stop pulling my shirt!
>

>
>Materazzi : Taciti, enculo, hai solamente cio che merite... / Shut up butt ficked one, you are only getting what you deserve...
>
>
>
>Zidane : Si e cio... / Yeah, that's it....
>

>
>Zidane walks away but the italian player continues
>
>
>Materazzi : Meritate tutti ci
That's a little worse than my personal theory.
I once saw a French movie where a head butt was described as a "coup de bougnole".
"Bougnole" in French for Arabs is like the n-word for blacks.
I think the Italian called him one, so Zizou gave him one.
At any rate, what a horrible way to end his career as a god...by showing that he was just a man.
:-(
A head butt in French is not "coup de bougnole" but "coup de boule".
And the slang word for an, Arab is "Bougnoule", not "bougnole".
:-(
Zidane: Oi, pack it in!
Materazzi: Shut it you bald twat.
Zidane: Please be quiet.
Materazzi: Grow some hair you frog.
[Zidane turns around and headbutts Materazzi in the chest]
:-(
M- I like your hair
Z-shut up
M-no i really do...u remind me of butthead.
zi-zu gets angry and headbutts
no im kidding, no matter wat zidane will always be a hero to france!!!!
Apparently...........
"I Hope Jean suffered"
To put it in context:
Jean Varraud is Zidane's first trainer and Zidane considers him as his second father.
He died just before World Cup started from a long cancer battle.
A Brasilian TV program used labial reading to discover what he said.
Aparently he call zidane's sister bitch 2 times...
Had it been a hockey game, no red card would have happened, the fight would have gone on, and the game would have been decided by a coin toss.
there was no fight. he collapsed and writhed in agony.
Zizu is the man, he went out hard, he's till a world champion
It was one of the most shaking moments in my life.....
I really want to know wat he said to Zidane...i think what Zidane did M. really deserved that from him
Whatever Materazzi said - it worked. France lose their best player and the number 1 penalty taket. RESULT!!!!
Materazzi wins and Italy are forever champions - ZZ ends career in disgrace. It's almost sublime... BRAVO ITALIA - Campione Del Mondo!!!
Zizo (or El Yazeed like his parents call him) is the best player of the past 20 years (and another 20 to come) ... so whatever was the reason I think Materazzi desrved it! I wish El yazeed had scored the header b4 he was sent off .. it would've been two killer headers one in the nest and one in the chest :-)
That was by far the greatest moment ever in soccer. Finally...not a bunch of wimps diving around everytime they get touched...like the italians did all tournament...THANK YOU ZIDANE!!
UH- LA- LA FRANCE !
THIS IS FRANCE FAULT 100%
THIS GUY HAD A LONG HISTORY OF VIOLENCE..THIS WASN'T
THE FIRST TIME HE ATTACKED SOMEONE ON A GAME....
& LE FRANCE, KNEW THAT.
BRAVO! BRAVO ! BRAVO !
HORACIO ELIZONDO....U PUT A STOP TO THAT BEAST !
FRANCE HYPE THIS HAS-BEEN TO THE POINT OF NO RETURN !
SO FRANCE, TODAY IS LE-BLUE
BUT INSTEAD THE ENTIRE COUNTRY SHOULD BE
IN LE SHAME !!!
Why? ... France just proved they're not a bunce of pussies like Italy... of course the Italian player had to embelish it like hed been shot...hahaha!!
It was released on a radio station that there was a racist comment shared between the two. It is known that ZZ is from North Africa. The story went along that as a child, ZZ had a rough time growing up bc he was not accepted by the other French children for being of Arab descent. So some name was thrown in by Materazzi. As a result, ZZ got cought up in the spur of the moment (understandable) and gave Materazzi what was deserved, but uncalled for. However, I have no clue what to believe about this story. My speculation is that Materazzi is too embarassed to come out with what he said, and ZZ is too much of a professional to release the comment. Time will only tell.
First of all, Zidane is not Arab, but Berber, a different tribe. Not that it matters though - Berbers are mostly Muslim, and calling him a dirty muslim terrorist is the epitome of disgusting ignorance. I hope Materazzi lives in shame the rest of his life for his comments.
I can't believe that I'm sticking up for the French, but I've got to say that Materazzi probably deserved it.
I'm now a big fan of Zidane. He would be very popular in the US by way of his blue-collar approach to soccer. He works hard and is tough.
This is the first time I've really watched soccer seriously and greatly enjoyed the WC.
There was a rumor that Zidane was going to play in the states. I would actually pay to see that guy play.
Loads of the people in france are of arab decent, les pieds noir, or whatever.... it too is a very multi cultural society, so i dont think his childhood had anything to do with the headbutt.(A racist comment seems to be the concensus, who knows.) And no one mentions the oscar winning performances by the italians...how can u want to earn your win by faking an injury every 2 seconds, just to gain control of the ball. Unfortuntely thats football i guess. Anyways, whatever the italian dude said, it was obviously rude enough to make zidane feel he had to do something about it, and thats his decision we should respect. we werent there, we dont know what was said, so who are we to judge. One pissed off incident CAN NOT ruin a career for such a legend. If it happened 3 games ago, it would already have been forgotten. So lets move on, remember him for the legend he is, how he far surpasses any one of the italian players (ever), and celebrate his career, not the headbutt.
Three observations:
Materazzi twisted Zidane's nipple in the physical contact prior to the exchange of words-- so whatever was said just pushed Zidane over the edge as he was already pissed at having his nipple twisted.
(Do a news search for Zidane and nipple if you don't believe me.)
Second, Zidane has had bad (even racist, although I am saying Materazzi made a racist comment) comments made to him before during many matches and should have known that one would be coming during this match when the biggest prize was on the line. So if Zidane wasn't prepared for such a comment, and thus prepared to restrain himself from a red card action, he is less intelligent than I thought.
Third, don't get mad, get even. Stay in the game, win the game and then kick Materazzi's ass immediately after the final whistle blows. Doing anything else if idiotic, especially in the World Cup final with billions watching you.
In sum, Zidane was a fool for doing that when everybody was watching in a World Cup final -- did he think one of the referees would not notice or that a camera would not catch it and it would not be on the stadium big screen? After he already head butted somebody in a game earlier in the tournament? Foolish and he let his teammates down in a big way.
Materazzi went down like a poof. If i went down like that on the rugby pitch i'd be laughed of the park.
As for Zidane he should have broke the bastards nose not a gentle tap to the chest whats that all about?
I'm sure Zidane will not regret it he must have known the consequenses and thought what was said was more important than football.
After all it only a game
interesting....i didnt realize instant replays were allowed to be used by the refs. perhaps if the players were wearing mics as well, 2 red cards would have been given out.
Abu El Zoz, no worries, u are the man, i'm so proud of you, i actually admire you more though i don
I so agree with dd. Zidane is a great player and nothing can change that. I respect him no matter what.
Still, I hope there are rules against unnecessary vicious verbal abuse in the field. How about each player carries a chip to record the converstation? If there is a serious violation, players can put in complains after the game using the recorder as their witness.
I agree with the comments about Zidane needing to respond to this. It may have been stupid, and cost him the opporunity to score, but France may have still lost the game, no? I also agree with the person who said that this would make great drama anywhere and esp in the USA where we respect "defending" onesself at the cost of an ass like Materazzi. To boot, I'm of Italian descent.
I am fortunate in that I can lip read Italian.
Materazzi said:
"Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries"
It was over the top.
Zidane is a great individual player, but a lousy team player. He did more to lose that game than anyone else. Name calling is rampant, and the best players learn to live with it. His actions can never be justified, regardless of what was said. My kids, both of whom have played soccer since kindegarten, were mortified by his actions. As a coach, I will now have to be even more vigilant with my players during rough play. I can hear the game chatter coming this fall - "Look, I gave him a Zidane!".
Materazzi should be ashamed of himself, but Zidane committed the greater wrong by choosing violence, without thinking about his teammates. He was a great player, but no hero.
zidane wasnt thinking about what your children were going to think, when he did the now infamous headbutt. Are you kids not allowed to watch hockey? Come on, children are not that sheltered. It was a random act, maybe he shouldn't have done it, but he did it for his own reasons...he knew he'd get kicked out, he's played long enough to know the consequences. everyone should be able to agree that it might not of been the right move, but either way he obviously did what he felt he had to do. end of story. i was shocked as well and disapointed that he ended his world cup and possible career like that, but im not going to forget everything he has done over the years, and think he is warping young childrens minds because of it!!
Only time will tell who
