Herzl's NFP. And Our NYT.
The NFP was the NYT of Europe, said Leo Lensing of Wesleyan. It was the most powerful newspaper in the continent, and maybe the world. Holding up a yellowed copy of what he called "the prayer book of cultured people everywhere," Lensing said that the NFP was written mostly by Jews, and written for Jews, too: the new professional German-speaking class in that great vanished arc of Central Europe, from Berlin to Prague to Vienna to Budapest. Kafka read it, too.
"Very few of us have any idea how powerful its editor was," Lensing said. Moritz Benedick was thought to be the second most powerful man in Austria after the Kaiser, Franz Josef. Once when the Kaiser couldn't see Bismarck, he fobbed him off to Benedick.
Fredric Morton, the moderator of the panel, said the paper's importance could be gauged by the role it had played in the history of Zionism. Theodor Herzl was the cultural editor of the paper, and "he used his position to gain access to the great personages of his day"—Kaiser Franz Josef, the Sultan of Turkey, Baron de Hirsch, and Lord Rothschild—to push his fantasy of the Jewish state.
Lensing chimed in that Herzl's editor Benedick was so conflicted about Zionism that he "strictly forbade" the mention of it in his newspaper. The word never appeared there. "With one exception," said Morton: in Herzl's obituary in 1904, and then in a late paragraph. Wow.
A few comments.
—On-line encyclopeidas say that the Neue Freie Presse ceased publication, merging with another paper, the same year Freud died, 1939. The most powerful newspaper in the world, out of business. Shows why Jews regard their position as precarious.
—Re: the hidden agenda of the paper's cultural editor. Journalists today would see Herzl's access-seeking conduct as completely unethical. I'd add that if you read Herzl's masterpiece, The Jewish State, it seems somewhat sketchy 110 years on. It is a scheme to end the Jewish problem by ethnically cleansing Europe of Jews—taking care to replace the financial capital Europe would lose, and working with the antisemites to perfect a "colonization" scheme, colonization being one of Herzl's favorite words. The book is glibly written, spends more time considering the problem of wild animals in the territory than it does that of Arabs, in sum is just what you would expect of an important, busy journalist. A vital manifesto for a movement; but not a serious piece of moral or political philosophy. Though of course Theodor Herzl was exalted, tragically, by the Holocaust, which showed him to have great, negative vision.
—The position of the Neue Freie Presse on Jewish questions reminds me of The New York Times. Zionism also made Establishment Reform Jewry in the U.S. uncomfortable; these important men felt, Look, we Jews are not a nation, and we don't want to leave the U.S., we like it here. Times Publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger was opposed to Zionism out of fear that Jews would be charged with dual loyalty. Such a concern was surely part of the reason the Times posted only gentile correspondents in Israel, a policy that I believe ended in the 80s. By then the dual loyalty charge had (it was felt) been laid to rest. Louis D. Brandeis had shown that that you could be a good American and a good Zionist, and there was no conflict of interest.
It's interesting how much the politics have changed. Today Israel is a fact and Jews are broadly included in the power structure; and if you even mention the old Reform Jews' universalist concern that Zionism would cause a confusion of American interests with Israel's, you're labeled an anti-Semite. These days, realist critics of our Middle East policy have managed to put the issue in our discourse, by saying that the Israel lobby is not acting in America's best interest; in their landmark paper, Walt and Mearsheimer used as evidence a statement former NYT editor Max Frankel made in his autobio, when he said that he used the Times editorial pages to bang the drum for Israel.
Establishment Jews would seem to feel as conflicted as ever over their place in American life; today the NYT, the most powerful newspaper in the world, basically ignores the issue of the Israel lobby. Not altogether different from the NFP refusing to cover a movement that one of its writers was quietly furthering.

Sooner or later you have to choose. The notion that there are no policy differences between Israel and the United States is absurd. During Israel's invasion of Lebanon back in the 1980s Arial Sharon sent IDF tanks through American lines. They only stopped when an American officer, carrying his .45 sidearm, jumped on the lead tank and threatened to shoot the Israel tank commander, an IDF colonel. Not a single American president supported Israel's decision to colonize the West Bank, knowing the problems these settlers would eventually cause when it came time to make peace. Yet every Israeli prime minister continued to build these settlements. When the first President Bush tried to deny funds to Israel to put more Russian immigrants in the territories, the Israel lobby put 1,000 people on the streets of Washington D.C. to lobby congress and undercut Bush. They later made sure that Bush dearly paid for the sin of trying to put American first by switching all their support and money to Bill Clinton. Clinton ran for office promising to appoint a cabinet that looked like America. But once he won he rather repaid his debt to the Israel Lobby by appointing one that looked like Tel Aviv. I didn't find anything resembling "real history" in Teitlebaum's writings, merely the obscene rantings of a fanatic, i.e., the Zionists killed six million Jews. This bit of counterfactual history might sit well with the chortling irony of Kurt Bloemker. His evident belief in the intellectual integrity of Hitler and anti-semites is touching, but off the mark. Which just makes my point. We don't really need to look at the past, when the same mistakes are being made in the present.
And that would include any anti-semetic behavior in Europe. Do we really need to look at the Hitler era to know that this is dangerous? Are we no more advanced today? I think we are, and I think we all know when something is wrong.
I'm not sure it is that clear to us that some American Jews may have a divided loyalty that is dangerous for America. With the lack of any national debate, it really isn't a subject that has already been assimilated into the consciousness of the American people.
And perhaps it should be.
Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not for a moment suggesting Americans revisit the treatment of the Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbour - which was not justified then, and wouldn't be justified now, wrt American Jews. I don't always agree with him myself. I would like to issue a plea, however, for a bit of decorum in the discussion. Frankly, the ad hominem nature of a number of posts is getting out of control. A progressive Turkish lawyer in Germany recently complainded that she was called a "Jewess" by her Turkish critics.

I greatly appreciate Phil's piece on this issue. Honesty and intellectual content is too rare to be obscured by the pathetic rages of a few respondents. Unfortunately, the NYT has rejected professional standards when reporting on Israel and Zionism. Consider, for example, recent NYT reporting on Iranian sponsorship of a meeting on holocaust studies.
Satmar Grand Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum was anything but a fanatic. He was a most respected Rabbi known for his brilliance, integrity and intellect. There were many more, opposed to Zionism not only because of Jewish Law but also because of the methods Zionists used (and still use) to advance their agenda.

Our Torah, in Tractate Ksubos, folio 111, specifies that the Creator, blessed be He, swore the Jews not to occupy the Holy Land by force, even if it appears that they have the force to do so; and not rebel against the Nations. And the Creator warned that if His oath be desecrated, Jewish flesh would be "open property", like the animals in the forest!! These are words of our Torah; and these concepts have been cited in Maimonides' "Igeres Teimon", "Be'er HaGola", "Ahavas Yehonosson", and in "Toras Moshe" of the Chasam Sofer.

The only solution is:
1. The Jewish people must reject, outright, a "Jewish State".
2. The Jewish people should accept the US compromise.
3. We must depose the atheist-Zionist "statesmen" from their role as Jewish leaders, and return to the faithful leadership of our sages.
4. We beseech the Nations to open all doors to immigration - not only the doors of Palestine.
5. Peaceful, non-Zionist religious personalities in Palestine, (particularly from the native population) and their counterparts in the Diaspora, should engage in responsible, face-to face negotiations on behalf of the Jewish people, with the British and the Arabs; with an aim of amicable settlement of the Palestine issue.
Every Jew is obliged to pray to the Blessed creator, for in Him lies all our strength. Let us bear in mind that our prayers be forthright. One should not entreat the Creator to provide a banquet on Yom Kippur, and one can not perform a ritual ablution with a dead bug in his hand. Similarly, we should avoid the untenable position of the robber who prays for Divine help in carrying out his crime. We should pray that Zionism and its fruits vanish from the Earth, and that we be redeemed by the Messiah with dispatch.
A prisoner is released only when he has served his time, or if he is pardoned by the President for good behavior. If he attempts escape and is apprehended, his term is lengthened, besides the beating he receives when he is caught.
Faithful Jews- for over three and one-half thousand years, in all parts of the world, through all trials, our grandfathers and grandmothers marched through seas of blood and tears in order to keep the Faith of the Torah unswervingly. If we have compassion for ourselves, for our women and children, and for the Jewish people, we will maintain our golden legacy today. We have been sentenced to exile by the King of Kings because of our sins. The eternal blessed be He, has decreed that we accept the exile with humble gratitude until the time comes, or until we merit His pardon through repentance if we seek to end the exile with force, G-d will catch us, as our sages have forewarned, and our sentence becomes longer and more difficult.
Many times in the past have segments of our people been defrauded by false messiahs - but none of the false messiahs has been as fallacious and delusory as the lie of Zionism. With our historical experience as our guide, no retribution has been or will be greater than the retribution for giving credence to Zionism. If we wish our exile-sentence commuted, we must appeal through repentance; and through total physical and spiritual observance of the Sabbath, laws of family purity, and study of Torah.
Let it be clearly understood that never in Jewish history (even in the time of Jeroboam or Achav) have such hostile atheists stood at the helm of the Jewish people as today.
How can we plead to the Almighty for mercy while we tolerate these vile, "wicked" leaders as spokesmen! Beloved brothers - let us cleanse our ranks and cleanse our midst; let us entreat the Almighty through prayer, repentance, and fulfillment of mitzvos that He alone redeem us, immediately.

Middle East diplomacy could use Enlightenment

The events of Sept. 11 have engendered a sense of helplessness in all of us. Some people respond to this helplessness by drawing parallels to World War II and reaffirming their faith in the invincibility of America. Those who favor diplomacy as a response feel equally helpless. No matter how you look at it, fighting terrorism by any means seems like a no-win situation. I want to offer a paradigm shift in diplomacy that, in my view, is worth a try.
Cultural history is complex and most Americans like to refer to their inherited Judeo-Christian values. It would probably come as a surprise to many Americans that much of our cultural heritage stems not from Judaism or Christianity, but from the European Enlightenment of the 18th century. Not enlightenment with a small "e," but the movement that towered over the late 17th century and all of the 18th with a large "E."
Notable Enlightenment thinkers were Voltaire, Diderot and Montesquieu in France, Lessing and Kant in Germany, Locke in England and Franklin and Paine in America. The Enlightenment was based on the notion that everyone was capable of reason and that people everywhere could reason their way out of every difficulty.
