Norah O'Donnell Sees Israel Lobby Behind Carter Row

Norah O'Donnell on MSNBC just now did a very aggressive job of interviewing Steve Berman, one of the Jews who resigned from the Carter Center advisory board in protest of Carter's book. O'Donnell asked whether he had been "lobbied" by Jewish groups to do so. Berman said he hadn't. She didn't seem to believe him, virtually repeating the question, this time adding "AIPAC", and then bridled at the fact that these so-called friends of Carter did all this without even talking to their former leader ahead of time. Didn't you owe the former President that? she asked.

O'Donnell made her own point of view clear when she showed footage of Carter, on Hardball, saying that the United States has been deprived (by the lobby) of the vigorous debate about the Occupied Territories that goes on every day in Israel itself. I applaud her for being a tough journalist who knows a smokescreen.

O'Donnell's stance is significant. It demonstrates that, 10 months on, and notwithstanding the inability of the New York Times to cover the matter and the smearing of the authors by the Washington Post, Walt & Mearsheimer have mainstreamed the lobby as an issue in our public life. The battle is on. American attitudes on Israel are changing. More and more Americans recognize a simple truth: the hateful Israeli occupation has undermined our image across the Arab world.

It must have been a real shock for someone like Berman, who is likely accustomed to being fawned over about his pro-Israel and anti-critics of Israel positions, to have an interviewer with the courage to take him on and not let him make the typical pro-Israel platitudes normally used to dry to destroy anyone who dares challenge or criticize Israel, or the actions of pro-Zionist American Jews.

Plaudits to Norah O'Donnell.

Bill Pearlman (not verified) says:

So, the fact that Steve Berman ( who I never heard of ) was asked a direct question and said that nobody approached him. Ergo that is positive proof that he was threatened because thats exactly what we would instruct him to say. Phil, you got us man. Aipac hit squads are even now faning across the country to stamp out all opposition to the Jewish conspiracy. How we missed you I don't know. But, I am going to resubmit your name to the elders in Jerusalem along with Norah O'Donnell. Retribution for youe astounding courage in the face of, what was that exactly, is coming.

brenda (not verified) says:

I finally got hold of the Carter book and have read a few chapters. It is eminently readable, gives a good history of US/Israel/Arab relationship via Carter's own history in this relationship. Reads a bit like an autobiography.

What has impressed me about Carter's book is his moderation. He is extremely even-handed with regard to ME nations. It makes you long for that time -- not all that long ago -- when the US was admired and respected internationally. With all her faults and flaws and hypocrisies, still the last, best hope. No more.

But I digress -- what I wanted to say was, given the moderation and obvious LIKING that Carter has for Israel, I'm very surprised that Berman reacted the way he did. I don't think it's out of the question that he was lobbied in some unsavory way (blackmail comes to mind)

Adolf (not verified) says:

"Steve Berman, one of the Jews who resigned from the Carter Center advisory board"

Two points Phil --
1. why do you assume that every one of the people who resigned is Jewish?
2. do you know how bigoted you sound -- "one of the Jews..." as if there is something wrong with being Jewish or, heaven forbid, resigning from your association because it departs from a core belief.

I can't believe the NY Observer still employs this guy. But when they finally realize that your posts generate the most vile anti-semitism (and that you are a fellow traverler yourself), you will endlessly complain that it's the jewish lobby's fault.

Ben (not verified) says:

I think that it shows that while Norah O'Donnell has heard of the vague Israel lobby, she doesn't understand it that well. That is why she asked those questions the way she did -- she's only got a very weak grasp on the issues at hand. Appropriate skepticism, but the amorphous Israel lobby isn't fully an AIPAC top down organization, but more the multicomponent lobby that Mearsheimer and Walt describe that is primarily based (within the Jewish portions) on shared ethnic identity and values as well as (within the religious right portions) on shared religious conviction. I personally find nothing wrong with their resignations, in fact, it gives more media coverage to the book in question.

lester (not verified) says:

it was a clumsy thing for her to say but no one will call her on it because they don't want people in America to know what the israel lobby is. But it is a little weird that they would do this a month after the thing comes out

adolf- berman is a jewish name

the wise king (not verified) says:

so, the ugly apostate says "Americans recognize a simple truth: the hateful Israeli occupation has undermined our image across the Arab world".
a few problems;
just as the wicked son, whose teeth shall be set on edge, separates himself from his people so does little philly weiss. However, the ugly apostate who has thus separated himself from his people is terribly deluded to think that he will be accepted by those who hate his people to begin with, ie the so called "Americans".
Instead, he will wander aimlesssly having in effect become nothing, belonging nowhere, "with no direction home".

Adolf (not verified) says:

Lester --

Berman is a Jewish name but need not be. One of the Signatories was a "Jr." while another was the "III". Weiss states that they are all Jews (as if no right minded Christian or Moslem can agree with the Jews and as if only a Jew would dare disagree with their dear Leader).

Simply put Lester -- Jews do not name their offspring Jr or III. Weiss never addresses this -- likely because either he knows nothing about Jews or Judaism and is more at home bashing Jews with his anti-semitic mother-in-law -- or because he fully knows this but rearranges the facts to fit his lefty agenda. You decide.

bill Pearlman (not verified) says:

It would be nice if Carter would actually participate in a debate on this instead of hiding. But leaving that aside Is it possible, just a chance that this Steve Berman, who I never heard of by the way and has a member of good standing in the LOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really should be told about this stuff. Is it possible that he resigned on principle and not because aipac hit teams threatened to kill him and his family. If it was that easy wouldn't we have made a visit to the Weiss clan and whacked Phil already.

Alan (not verified) says:

Adolf,

1) First of all, Berman is, yes, Jewish. It took two minutes googling to find that out.

2) Mr. Weiss never said those who resigned were all Jewish. He said: "Steve Berman, one of the Jews who resigned from the Carter Center advisory board in protest of Carter's book". And yes, Steve Berman is one of the Jews who resigned. That doesn't mean all those who resigned were Jews. You follow?

3) The two signatories who had a "Jr" and a "III" were not Bermans, they were William B. Schwartz, Jr and William B. Schwartz III.

http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/stories/2007/01/11/0111carter.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=13

Schwartz is a VERY common German name and they may be Jewish or not, but Weiss was talking about Berman who, again, was indeed one of the Jews who resigned. You never addressed this -- likely because either you know nothing about logic and you are more at home bashing assimilationists with your anti-gentile mother-in-law -- or because you fully knew this but you rearranged the facts to fit your Likudnik agenda.

We decide.

Anyway, thanks for fighting the good fight against the christ-killers. Like I told that heeb cop in LA "we all know who's behind all the wars in the world".

Guess what?

"Among the 14 individuals who have resigned are several former and current members of the ADL Southeast Region board of trustees."

bill Pearlman (not verified) says:

But Brian, shouldn't the ADL JEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have stayed on at the Carter center in order for us to sink our bloody fangs into the organization and bend it to our purposes. Wasn't this a misstep by the LOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. And are not the elders in Jerusalem going ot be pissed.

Adolf (not verified) says:

Alan - puhhleaaassseee.

Weiss clearly meant that ALL those who resigned were Jewish; if he didn't, then he should have addressed those who were not as well. that would give a complete picture. Anyone with remote knowledge of logic and Weiss' thought process would know this. I guess you lack both while you twiddle your anti-semitic mother-in-law with Wiess watching.

Alan (not verified) says:

Phil Weiss:

"Steve Berman, one of the Jews who resigned from the Carter Center advisory board in protest of Carter's book."

Adolf:

"Weiss clearly meant that ALL those who resigned were Jewish."

Umm, no! Unless you Likudniks have paranormal powers and can read people's minds!

Weiss said Berman was one of the Jews who resigned, and this was accurate, end of story. But be my guest, keep arguing, I'm sure lots of people enjoy watching this!

P.S. Bill, your new friend is embarrassing you and your fellow Likudniks. I'm sure you guys can do better!?

Adolf (not verified) says:

Alan --

You're right, this is fun.

Is Phil was accurate he would've said "Berman, a Jew who resigned....."

The fact he said "one of the Jews" implies that there was more than 1. Well then, who were the others? Were any who resigned not Jewish? Why did they resign?

Considering that EVERY DAY Phil takes up the nefarious influence of the Jewish lobby, Israelis, Zionists and Jewish neocons; considering that he has never cited one NON-Jewish supporter of Israel nor given a reason why any non-Jew would support Israel...

it is only logical (something you may want to study one day) to assume (with Phil you need to make a lot of assumptions) that Phil meant that each and every one of those tendering his or her resignation was Jewish. If not -- then considering his ouevre -- he should have addressed (to him) the amazing phenomenon of a non-Jewish liberal American supporting Israel vis-a-vis Carter.

Please learn to interpret Alan, it'll save us a lot of time and we could get to AIPAC discussions.

Wiseking 4:03pm, Phil Weiss IS at home. In America.

Adolph 7:37pm, I can name you one non-Jew mentioned by Phil who supports Israel. The much-maligned Jimmy Carter. You should learn to read books, it will expand your mind and maybe let you have some peace.

Arguing around the margins of an argument is classic hasbara and a time-waster to boot. Like, people, we are teetering on the brink of WW3. Let's get down to it and try to do some good in the little bit of time we have left.

I think what drew so much fire on Jimmy Carter's book was the title. A lot of people couldn't get past that. Especially Israeli supporters, they seem to have reacted to "Palestine, Peace Not Apartheid" as if it were a horrific insult and an existential threat.

But if you would read the book, you will find out that the title applies to Palestinians as much as it does to Israelis.

To Israelis, Carter seems to be saying: "Think. Is this the kind of state which you aspired to? Make peace, not war."

To Palestinians, Carter can be read as saying: "You've missed a lot of opportunities to make peace. Do you really want to live like this for another generation, under an apartheid regime? Make peace, not war."

Adolph 7:41pm, remember that the goy can turn on a dime. Prosecuting the Israeli cause in America these days is not as safe as what you might think. Plenty of people here believe we were led into the disastrous Iraq war by a fifth column loyal to a foreign country. Whether that is actually true or not doesn't matter. What matters are widely-held perceptions. You might want to try for a little less arrogance.

I appreciate O'Donnell's journalism and tough questioning. Israeli journalist Amira Hass has said that the job of the journalist is to monitor the centers of power. Questioning like O'Donnell's is essential to this role.

Washington Post, Jan 11:

"Berman said he began the resignation campaign after reading the book last month, and he emerged yesterday as its spokesman. He answered one question before it was asked. "It's fair to say," he said in an interview, that "most" of the people he contacted about the book are Jewish, as were the signatories of the resignation letter. "But that wasn't a subject that came up in our discussion.""

Yes, thank you "anonymous," the bulk of the mainstream coverage has been clear that the resigning board members are Jewish, even headlining such info. Apparently it's anti-Semitic even to mention Jewishness in any context at this point.

Mr. Weiss, thanks for explaining (farther up) why you allow the rants/screeds from the right; I was wondering. But you're covering a very important story so I'll try to stay with you.
