The New Bogeyman Downtown

Now that the Port Authority, the Governor, Mayor and Larry Silverstein are all in agreement about the World Trade Center, they are ganging up on the insurers who have yet to pay Silverstein more than $2 billion in court-ordered awards. Today, Governor Pataki's press office e-mailed a statement saying, "I have spoken with Governor Corzine and Mayor Bloomberg's offices and together we have asked the Port Authority and Silverstein Properties to commence appropriate legal action within the next several days to gain the resolution and assurances we need." Silverstein seconded that with a statement of his own.

Sources said a lawsuit could be filed early next week. Port Authority spokesman John McCarthy wouldn't confirm the schedule but said, "We are exploring our legal options."

Under the April 26 agreement, about 35 percent of the available insurance money was supposed to be transferred from Silverstein to the Port Authority to go towards the Freedom Tower but so far the insurance companies have not agreed that they would make the switch.

Oh, and anybody who thought the Rebuild Them Now Movement was dead should check out the comments on our previous Freedom Tower post. -Matthew Schuerman

re: June 16 article by Calderone DANIEL LOEB PURCHASE OF 113-115 BANK STREET, leaves out the lurid truths on this West Village Carriage House. Loeb bought 113-115 Bank Street from John L. Stewart two years ago for 11 million. The Bank Street townhouse was a CHinese distribution warehouse in the 1920'S and before that a hospital during the Civil War, thus many men have died in this building and chickens slaughtered. John L. Stewart alias Ralph Warne Lindsey bought this house from dance Choreographer Murray Lewis in the early 1990's for about two million. Mr. Stewart, former digraced Wall Street Banker turned art dealer (not collector) who is famous in the art world for concocting ponzi schemes, only paid Murray Lewis for half the agreed sale price. John Stewart proposed half the sale would go as a non-taxable donation to Murray's dance Company, THIS half was never delivered. John L. Stewart, a humble autistic artist turned Banker(1970's) from South Jersey gained his entry into the upper crust of the art world via his long time boyfriend Hedge Fund Billionaire "Uptown Bob" Robert W. Wilson famous patron of Lincoln Center/World Monuments Fund/ Theater Director Robert M Wilson & Phillip Glass. Mr. RW Wilson not only gives access to his pool of wealthy patrons but protects (with anonymous stealth) John when he gets into financial/legal dire straights. John L Stewart 's official mode of income was subleting apartments at 113-114 Bank Street often keeping the hefty deposits from renter. He likes to think of himself as a collector but infact he is an amateur situationist buying art on behalf of Robert W art hedge fund, often overcharging him for a little extra cash to buy real estate. His latest is a 10,000 square foot rental on SOuth 4th/Kent in Williamsburg and 3 houses in the Hamptons. The former tennents of 113-115 Bank Street would have plenty of stories to fill a book. The tragedy is that allot of the victims who John dupes into such schemes are unsuspecting generous artists, art galleriers, and art partons(especially the old and young) who only trust Mr. Stewart because of his seemingly respectable association with Robert W.

This recent sale to Loeb has secured Stewart into the social standing which he has for so long struggled to project on the surface. John Stewart is a lonely gay man who presents himself as a charming art collector who "just loves his dog". If I recall correctly last summer you printed a brief article in TRANSOM which made reference to large posters glued up around town depicting Mr Stewart feeding his dog a severed toy head in-front of an Attila Richard Lukacs wax statue of a dead neo-nazi punk. This was indeed a real and typical scene at 115 Bank Street. Bank Street was also know for it's private S&M parties. Now, non of this is good for the real estate value of the block .... so I supose you might not want to print this and other details.

These posters were circulating in the Hamptons as well most likely the expression of a disgruntled former assistant to John who was stiffed on a $500 per week salary check. Stewart would have up to 3-4 assisants working for his "Art Collection" their purpose was more as to serve as distraction and companionship over actual productive work. These assistants were paid for by Robert W. Wilson. The summer article also misquotes a Supreme COurt Civil suit brought against Stewart for roughly $120,000 by a the art gallerist Stevenson Fine Art in Williamsburg. I have bought paintings from Neil Stevenson and have had some insight into this particular case. Simply this trusting young art dealer was involved in selling art to Robert W. Wilson through John Stewart. Early in their business relationship Mr. Stewart convinced Mr. Stevenson to loan him this large sum of cash to pay the late mortgage payments on 113-115 Bank Street. Despite promissory notes and a legally binding agreement Mr. Stewart refused to return the money.

These types of situations are common with Mr. Stewart, especially involving real estate agents and art galleries and artists. I have heard horror stories of John soliciting art on consignment, selling it, and then not PAYING THE ARTIST!

This is a very interesting story which goes deep into the root of bad behaviour and Environmental toxins. In John L Stewart/Ralphe Warne Lindsey case it was the lack of a Genuine and Trustworthy Father while growing up in SOuth Jersey. This
coupled with his lack of empathy for human suffering possibly associated with his Autism. The cause of Autism has been linked to Heavy Metals in our drinking water and soil. In America we derive a large % of our energy from burning Coal. Burning Coal pumps Mercury and other toxic cancer causing metals into the atmosphere.

On the subject of John Lindsey Stewart. He also uses the name Ralph Warne Lindsey. I was his boyfriend for a number of years in the 80's. John worked on Wall Street, he was passionate about certain artists, especially Phillip Glass. John is a classic socio path - he is charming and enganging with new lovers as long as they move into his world and allow themselves to be manipulated. The young and uninitiated are especially vulnerable to his financial schemes.

I just bought a lithograph by Andre Minaux. In the lower left is the address 115 Bank St NY. Does anyone out there know the purpose of this piece? I find no reference or image of it at all. Thanks, Sean Chandler West, Washington, DC

My name is Peter. I did some jail time after working with John Stewart on Wall Street in the 1980's. John managed to get off the hook as he had more money hidden away in his Delaware LLC.

It is my vague recollection that 115 Bank street used to be a printing house in the 50's. I believe it was MOulet or something french. I also have a limited edition print from this printing house. It was a very prestigious printer. I was walking my dog passed there the other day. It looks like they are putting up COndo's at 115-113 Bank Street. I also heard that Daniel Loeb's flipped the house for a few million profit. They just let it sit there for four years. Amazing.

I also had a friend in the art world, an Opera composer kid from Phili. He did some art installation work on the side for the Robert Wilson art hedge fund aka John Stewart Partnership. John L. Stewart was his boss. Apparently John L. Stewart coerced him into taking large check payments from ? , clearing them through his account, and then giving the cash to John. John Stewart had a sob story to explain away the unethical propositions and dangled possible introductions to famous patrons of the arts. He also told me that the guy barely could make his mortgage payments and would make a living ripping off his tenants upstairs. He would use his connections to the art world to scam highly respected social figures, like Beth Rudin DeWoody, Phil Glass, art dealers like Max Protecht, or Morning Slater. These rich people can right it off as a loss but when he steals and damages the credit of young artists, that is pure Evil. Also the wealthy ones who were duped think it's funny. "hee, hee , you got me darling!" I heard that Asher Edelman, the art collector, knew about all these allegations, he laughed. There is a segment of perverted wealthy New York society that revels in hearing how others get suckered out of money. Its' like" ha, ha, you got duped, Welcome to New York sucker." He's still out there running the same scams since selling the stolen house, riding around in that leased black BMW station wagon (ATH1234) He and Bob sold allot of the art. I think Uptown Bob has ended his business associations with him. I heard he's moved up to work-over New Hampshire and back out to SOuth Hampton. Anyone in New Hampshire have a story for us ?
