Hudson Yards Café fills the gaping void of neighborhood bars on an as-yet-undeveloped industrial stretch of far southwestern Hell’s Kitchen. It’s more than convenience that has the working drones of the area’s many media outlets buzzing in every night, though. The place is only a few years old, but its décor is decidedly retro. Venetian blinds shielding the windows and Deco-inspired hanging lamps with opaque glass shades give the feel of a bygone era, while the African red mahogany bar is simply timeless. Headline writers, researchers, reporters, editors, and obsessive fact checkers quaff pints of Guinness while dunking blackened sirloin tips into chipotle cream sauce. An expansive American menu, locally sourced whenever possible, encompasses artisanal cheese plates and apricot-glazed pork chops, as well as a sliced steak burger served on a baguette. For some throwback sincerity, break the ice with Brooklyn-born owner Jim Reardon. The garrulous son of a NYPD officer, he’s as quick to offer his opinion on the development of the nearby yards as he is to belt out a song about old New York.
