Phil Rizzuto, the former MVP Yankee shortstop and baseball commentator, died today at the age of 89.

Rizzuto, a Brooklyn native known to teammates and fans as “Scooter,” anchored the middle of the infield for the all-time-great Yankee teams that played in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. He was well-known to later generations of New Yorkers for making up, along with Bill White, one of the most memorable play-calling teams ever.
