Jackson Heights City Council candidate Danny Dromm hosted a number of influential local politicians at a fund-raiser this weekend, most notably city Comptroller Bill Thompson, who will be a special guest at a fund-raiser for Dromm’s opponent in the Democratic primary, Alfonso Quiroz [time clarified]. Quiroz's boyfriend and treasurer is Thompson's director of communications.

According to a press release sent by Dromm, Thompson said at the event, “when I was Danny's boss as president of the New York City Board of Education, Danny stood up and took on an issue (multicultural education) that was unpopular to support. Danny did that because he is an excellent teacher. He taught us all an important lesson; just what teachers are supposed to do.”

Which goes to say that even though some 2009 races are getting started, not everyone seems to be obeying the unspoken rule about avoiding your friend's opponents.
