In a Romantic City, On a Business Trip...Without Josh

LAURIE:

Dear Josh:

I have been alone in Barcelona for about eight hours, the last three of which were spent sleeping in my little hotel room. It's 8:30 P.M. and the sun is still fairly high in the sky, thanks to the absence of daylight savings time. My room overlooks a paved and red-painted play yard. Right now there are several teenage girls on old-school rollerskates out there, practicing their moves and wearing identical blue skating skirts. It's really warm here. Those fleece-lined track pants felt so right in the Sam Adams bar at Newark, but became so wrong at the Barcelona taxi stand.

I was sick on the flight from Newark to Frankfurt. Which part of whiskey, Ambien, gin and red wine do you think was the problem? read more »

Young men and women in Barcelona have made a real commitment to the mullet. It's hard to say whether they're being ironic or earnest.

Does Patrick Kennedy Want Out of Politics?

I don't care whether it was Ambien or alcohol; I wonder whether Patrick Kennedy isn't—unconsciously—seeking a way out of politics with his latest run-in with the law. Kennedy last went into rehab just five months ago, now he's going back. The Almanac of American Politics reports that he had several "imbroglios" in recent years, including shoving an airport security guard in 2000 and, in 2003, saying, "I haven't worked a [expletive] day in my life," as a way of attacking Bush's tax cuts by citing his own privileged background.

Kennedy lacks his father's political temperament, let alone his charisma. His achievements have been middling (again, per the Almanac), including supporting the Iraq war and then accusing the administration of deceiving him. And, maybe more revealing, twice ducking a chance to run for Senate. He was obviously pushed into politics by family pressure, internalized or otherwise; he got in at age 21, and who doesn't question career choices made at that age?

It's interesting to consider that he had his crackup at the Capitol. Some hostility there toward symbols of authority? By leaving the place for good, he would do a real favor to his under-served constituents, and probably himself too.

Blaming the Ambien

Another turn in what would be an internal gay-community flap over how to deal with Hillary Clinton would probably not be terribly interesting, if not for the recantation that an Upstate Democrat, Matthew John, offers in this widely-circulated email:

You may have read in the paper recently about individuals prescribed Ambien getting into car accidents and having no knowledge of their actions. Well in my case I was driving my computer while taking Ambien. I wrote a rambling email regarding [the Empire State Pride Agenda], that had I been fully aware of my actions, I would have worded very differently.

I had been troubled by the position that the director of EPSA had taken in regards to not financially supporting Senator Clinton and in turn, interpreted this as not supporting Senator Clinton -- an easy connection to make when your brain has been re-wired.

I appreciate Jim Rolls -- reasoned reply to my rant and thank him for taking the time to educate me on all the good things that ESPA has done and I suspect will continue to do in the future.

Please accept my apologies for the way in which I addressed this issue. The issue of whom to support and who is worthy of our support seems to be garnering much interest in the GLBT community.

I can think of a politician or two who might find that line handy.
