Arnold's New York Money

Michael Bloomberg made a hefty contribution towards Arnold Schwarzenegger's effort to get legislative redistricting in California.

But some other notable New Yorkers have opened up their wallets and given to another Schwarzenegger venture: his campaign committee. That's according to a financial report posted yesterday for Governor Schwarzenegger’s California Dream Team: read more »

Bloomberg Tries a California-First Approach to Reform

Michael Bloomberg is having another run at Albany lawmakers, but this time, he's taking a less direct approach.

At an event in midtown yesterday afternoon, Bloomberg said he was donating money to help Arnold Schwarzenegger’s effort to push nonpartisan redistricting in California and said he hoped the efforts out there would advance the issue here.

If California could do it, Bloomberg said, it might "shame" New York lawmakers into doing likewise. read more »

Bloomberg Supports Redistricting, May 'Shame' Legislators Into It

Michael Bloomberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke with Charlie Rose about the economic and political issues they're facing at the annual Card Luncheon, which is going on at the Four Seasons in midtown right now.

Bloomberg acknowledged the economy is tough, but said that because the cost of construction is coming down, "if you want to build a building, now is the time to do it."

Schwarzenegger thanked the mayor for donating money to push the governor's plan for redistricting in California.

Bloomberg said he'd like that to happen here, and that if legislators can't be convinced to do it, he could "maybe shame them into doing it."

Here are the priorities listed on this year's New York City Card, according to a release sent out by the mayor's office: read more »

Bloomberg and Stars at the Four Seasons

Here is Michael Bloomberg holding court with a few people at the Four Seasons in midtown before a roundtable discussion to outline the mayor's priorities for the city.

The white-haired guy to the right is (former?) Eliot Spitzer nemesis Ken Langone.

The annual "Card Luncheon" is when Bloomberg tells city elite about what he thinks they should ask for when political folks knock on their door for contributions.

Spitzer and the Schwarzenegger Plan

Eliot Spitzer and Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a letter to Washington today urging federal lawmakers to pass a Farm Bill Act currently under consideration.

According to the letter, Spitzer and the other governors want increased funding for farmers who harvest “specialty crops” like fruits, money to fight “invasive species” like the long horned beetle, and an expansion of the crop insurance and conversation programs.

The letter also provides an excuse to consider how these two governors, Spitzer and Schwarzenegger, are alike.

Both talked tough when they came into office. Spitzer steamrolled. Schwarzenegger called people “girlie men.” But soon after taking office, Schwarzenegger lost every ballot initiative he supported, making him vulnerable to a challenge for re-election. Then came the green initiatives, a change in tone (has he called anyone a girlie man recently?) and a landslide re-election victory.

Just something to keep in mind ahead of the inevitable Education of Eliot Spitzer's storyline. read more »

Mercury Hires Arnold's Campaign Manager

Mercury Public Affairs, the company that helped bring you three terms of George Pataki and is now working on John McCain's presidential campaign, just announced the hiring Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign manager Steve Schmidt.

Interestingly, the formal announcement from Mercury's managing partner Kieran Mahoney doesn't mention McCain at all.

From the statement:

"[Schmidt's] experience in the presidential campaign, the California governor's race and the Supreme Court confirmation process gives him an unmatched understanding of how polling, grassroots mobilization, issue advocacy, government relations and media relations work together to achieve measurable business results."

Full statement after the jump. read more »
