It's official.

NBC News execs announced today that Republican strategist and McCain confidant Mike Murphy is joining NBC News and MSNBC as a contributor.

On Monday, in a column in The New York Times, Bill Kristol suggested that Mr. Murphy--who helped craft Mr. McCain's failed bid for the Republican nomination for president in 2000--would soon be joining Mr. McCain's camp.

Afterward, Mr. Murphy denied the rumor and subsequently told reporters that he would be joining NBC.

Today, NBC confirmed the news, announcing that Mr. Murphy will provide analysis to NBC Nightly News, Meet the Press, Today, and MSNBC.

Adolfo Carrion's communications director, Mike Murphy, is leaving for a job with the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

While it's a loss for Carrion, it's something of a win that Murphy wasn't hired by another city comptroller candidate.

That's more or less what happened with John Collins, who was hired by Anthony Weiner, a likely mayoral candidate.

Collins had recently worked for two possible mayoral candidates before going to Weiner: Christine Quinn and Betsy Gotbaum (who had been considered a longshot candidate until this interview put that notion to rest).

In addition to picking up a seasoned communications staffer, Carrion must be enjoying the fact that he's bringing a Boston native to work in The Bronx.

As Vallone notes in an emailing announcing Murphy's departure: "None of us are too sure how long a rabid Red Sox fan will survive up there."

My guess: at least until 2009.
