Robert Redford Remembers Paul Newman

We've seen a lot tributes to the late Paul Newman this week. He touched a great many people, from director Robert Benton to David Letterman to director Sam Mendes. It seems that everyone who met him had a story to tell.

However, the stories we've been most interested to hear were from his friend and cinematic partner in crime, Robert Redford. And yesterday, Mr. Sundance himself finally wrote about the late Mr. Newman for Time Magazine.

In a touching first person appreciation, Mr. Redford talks about Mr. Newman's acting style, his sense of humor and his charity work. But what we loved reading were the personal stories of their friendship. We found this passage particularly endearing, funny and warm. A great portrait of what Paul Newman was all about: read more »

Dad and Daughter Moment at Redford Premiere

I just came from seeing the premiere of Amy Redford's directorial debut, Guitar. Just two rows ahead of me was the (still gorgeous) golden head of her father, Sundance Film Festival founder, Robert Redford. He was wearing a black turtleneck, camel-colored scarf, glasses, and tried to stay as low-key as possible (not an easy task considering how fast the camera-phones came out) during his daughter's big moment. Ms. Redford, who inherited her father's blonde locks, introduced her movie, taking a moment to single out her star, the out-of-this-world beautiful Saffron Burrows, whom Ms. Redford referred to as "her muse." The film is shot entirely in New York, and is about a young woman who is diagnosed with cancer and given two months to live. Janeane Garofolo and David Wain both have cameos! At the Q&A following the premiere, Ms. Redford deflected all attention to her cast and crew (though "Dad" was thanked as well). As Mr. Redford left, signing autographs and posing for pictures, he flashed a mega-watt smile.

Tom Cruise Sits Alone at Lunch

For all his winning charm, Tom Cruise is despised by his Lions for Lambs co-stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, an insider told the Huffington Post. When the subject of Ms. Streep and Mr. Redford’s absence from a recent dinner honoring Mr. Cruise was raised at the event, the source reportedly spilled the beans.

“Meryl and Bob can’t stand Tom. In London, Tom kept trying to push himself into interviews. Bob said, No. Tom wouldn’t listen. Meryl has done almost nothing for the movie. She wants nothing to do with him.”

Another source, however, tried to take the stirring spoon out of the pot, saying, “That’s mean. They’re great friends. Just look at their interview on Good Morning America.”

Oh, and Nicole Kidman said that her life didn’t feel “relevant” when she was married to him. Oh, snap!
