George Clooney: The Next Rachel Zoe?

Plenty of leading ladies relied on the expert advice of their stylists to “play it safe” on the red carpet at last night’s Oscars. (During a brief interview, Jennifer Garner, who looked insanely chic in a black Oscar de la Renta ruffled gown, mentioned her beauty-bestie Rachel Zoe several times.) Sarah Larson, on the other hand, looked to blast-from-the-past actor George Clooney, her boyfriend of seven months, to ensure her ensemble was sufficiently wowable.

“I curled her hair,” Mr. Clooney deadpanned to Us of how he helped Ms. Larson prep for the big night. Contrary to comedian Kathy Griffin’s recent claims that only D-list celebs show up super early to red carpet events, the Best Actor nominee, who graces the cover of the current issue of Time, showed up two hours early, allowing the couple enough time to chat with every news outlet stationed along the publicity gauntlet set up outside L.A.’s Kodak Theater. Mr. Clooney, it seems, isn’t just a master coiffeur, he also bragged of being Ms. Larson’s “seamster.” (The brunette beauty wore a beaded, silver-and-pink Valentino gown to the awards show.) “The ironing of the beads works very well,” he added to the whisper weekly of his work on the frock. “I sewed all the beads back on myself.” Despite the apparent ease with which he completed Ms. Larson’s look, his plan for the rest of the evening, he said, was to “drink.”

Ian McKellen’s Member and Other Broadway Monuments of 2007

A year without a new play by Sir David Hare can’t be all bad—and so it happily proved.

Top of my list is the stunning, imaginative achievement of Gregory Burke’s Black Watch—the first docudrama about war I’ve seen to successfully turn reportage into art, and the first play about the Iraq war to tell its story from the point of view of the soldiers. It was a political play that—praise be!—didn’t preach to the choir. To the contrary, it frequently wrong-footed us. It took us all as close to the experience of war as any of us is ever likely to get, thank God. Its ensemble of unknown Scottish actors was superb. And it left us in tears.

Many theatergoers had to be turned away during its sold-out run at St. Ann’s Warehouse. It would be a smashing gift to New York if Black Watch returned in the New Year. read more »

On Dec. 8, 2007, a single performance of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Richard Rogers Theater smashed the record for the highest gross of a play or musical in one night, totalling $153,880.
Jennifer Garner Calls In NYPD

Jennifer Garner wasn’t afraid to ask for help from the pros when things got hairy with the paparazzi yesterday in New York. Not quite the Desert Storm-ready entourage that Jessica Simpson courted at JFK last Friday, the gaggle of New York’s Finest that rushed to Ms. Garner’s aid appeared to be equally smitten with the film star and mother of Violet Affleck. Thanking the officers for their speedy protection, the Juno star apparently exchanged digits with one of the coppers.
